Question to eBay: Review instead of Rating?
Hello, why can some sellers not be rated, but ONLY an item review be given?
This is of NO USE to the seller...
Is this a system error?
If so, is it also connected to the Detailed Ratings for all 4 points, which sometimes work and sometimes don't!
I myself receive ratings for communication, even though none has taken place.
If I communicate with a seller, this point is missing.
Best regards, Peter

·2 months agoI’ve got a screenshot here showing the issue, since I fell for it the first time too.
As you can see at (1), I thought (...shipped quickly... blah blah) that I was rating the seller there.
Only then did I realize that I’d been taken in by eBay^^ and, under (2), rated the seller (redacted) once again:

Hello @p-schauberger and thank you for reporting your observation to us.
In the Vehicles category, users are currently first directed to a separate form for product reviews before they can leave a seller review. This adjustment was introduced to put more focus on product reviews in this category.
The feature has been active since April 2025. We are aware that this has also changed the review behavior. The responsible teams are currently examining possible improvements to further optimize the experience.
Thanks for the inclusion, @bootyooty - no mistake 🙂.
Best regards
Miriam

OP3 months agoHey Miriam,
Thanks for the info.
A SMALL note on the page would definitely be very HELPFUL!
That also means, though, that I “HAVE TO” leave a review first before I can rate it ?!?!
Of course it would be even better if the DIY hamsters would just stop doing that.
Best, Peter

Your description also applies to my last purchase, a phone cable.
But there were no cars involved. My seller offered
different cables, electronic parts.
I didn’t particularly like this kind of rating.

Hi Miriam, hi Patrick,
I hope this "improvement" is limited to this category only and won’t be rolled out to all categories later. Otherwise, I fear I’ll only receive automated ratings, because my clientele definitely won’t go along with this and would rather refrain from leaving a rating.
Unfortunately, I’m increasingly seeing the tendency for eBay to patronize both buyers and sellers.
It looks like eBay wants to build itself a market just as Astrid Lindgren wrote in Pippi Longstocking: "I build my world the way I like it".
But whether this suits long-time buyers or sellers seems by now to interest nobody at eBay anymore. I’m increasingly getting the impression that sellers who were once courted are becoming less and less interesting to eBay with the addition of major customers. In doing so, eBay also forgets that they are often represented on this marketplace as buyers as well.

·2 months agoThank you very much for the explanation.
It also bothered me when buying motor oil, which I only wanted to use abroad months later.
How am I supposed to rate that already today?
But I also don't want to deprive the seller of their rating.
Only because of the requirement to rate the product beforehand do I have to forgo rating the seller. Because according to eBay guidelines alone, a false product rating (false in the sense that I can only truly rate it AFTER using it) would probably also be inappropriate.
A product rating should be optional, not mandatory.
Best regards

I’m not familiar with that, there is occasionally the option to show the product rating above or below the actual seller rating option, but on its own, no, I’ve never seen it like that.
@miriam@ebay is that maybe a bug?

Always something new (though pointless 😉 )

·3 months agoThe fact that the view is different for users is already unbearable, this has also already been complained about and passed on.... I think the product rating could be left out entirely.

I assign the stars based on what the product is like and write the seller rating in the field, done.
I also think that this may provoke bad ratings if buyers rate products that were not made by the seller at all, but merely sold.
What this mixing of review and seller rating is supposed to be for, only eBay probably knows. At least one can hope so.
