eBay refuses to refund VAT paid twice on imports
On the Ebay site, it says the following:
Double-paid VAT
If you were charged VAT a second time by the carrier when your goods were delivered, you can contact eBay and provide us with proof that VAT was paid a second time. The VAT that eBay charged for the first transaction can then be refunded.
It has happened to me many times that I had to pay VAT twice, even when the seller had neatly put an IOSS number on the box. Until recently I could always claim this back from Ebay, and the VAT amount paid to Ebay was duly refunded. But now Ebay customer service is suddenly being difficult. The reason? I sent them an invoice from UPS this time (previous invoices were from PostNL), and they do not call the tax due VAT, but "turnover tax". You might say, what does it matter, everyone knows turnover tax is just another word for VAT! Unfortunately, Ebay customer service doesn't know that, and no matter how often I explain to them that turnover tax and VAT are really the same thing, they refuse to believe me and keep insisting that they are two different things that have nothing to do with each other. What am I supposed to do now? It concerns an amount of the equivalent of EUR 36. Not a huge amount, but still too much to just let it go.
