That is of course annoying, but credible.
If you explain this situation to him in a friendly conversation,
he will certainly be understanding.
If not, he would of course have a claim to this item.
I'm sure you'll find a solution too.
I wish you a buyer who is understanding, but
for now let's first wait and see how the customer reacts.

basically just ask the buyer for understanding by explaining the unfortunate situation to them, and then cancel the transaction with the buyer’s agreement. At least that increases the chance of not getting a negative review right away.
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to avoid a defect.
