Free sales for individuals

I once commented on free sales for private sellers on eBay.
In the meantime, I have sold 27 items, 20 of which were only through classifieds.
I used to successfully sell on eBay, so why does it almost always only work via classifieds today, even though eBay talks about free sales?
Ultimately, it means that I sell more or less only when I pay for ads.
Where does eBay actually show ads? Isn't it all eBay itself trying to earn commissions?
Of course, I can do without ads, but then I hardly sell anything anymore. I'm better off [not on eBay]!!

Visibility on eBay is a very complex topic. It can't be achieved through ads alone.
As a commercial seller myself, I've never run ads and don't plan to ever do so.
Nevertheless, I'm generally satisfied with the search results for my items, e.g. in this market segment:

·6 months agoSelling privately is completely pointless. Yes, it’s "free" but I don’t even get views anymore. Over weeks, items get viewed less than 5 times. Then don’t call ebay free if there’s basically no visibility left.

·6 months agoThere are VKs that pay for visibility, and that they are favored in that case is surely crystal clear!
And yet everything is shoved down the throats of the private ones, and the others pay the bill! And then you give them an inch and they want the whole hand!

·10 months agoI completely share your observation. Yes, that's how it is. And of course there's a business model behind it; it would be absurd if there wasn't.
Still, selling without fees for private sellers is in principle possible. It often just takes a very long time nowadays, also because, by my reasoning, the paid ads somehow always have to be pushed to the front or suddenly appear in the middle of search results even though they don't fit thematically. Spoiler: that absolutely ruins my shopping experience too. My selling experience has long been ruined anyway. No more sorting out a few things and passing them on quickly. That's over.
Still, several factors always come together, supply/demand/areas of interest etc., and often the same thing is available from dealers under better conditions, e.g. with a return option if you don't like it/it doesn't fit. Where I then buy certain things is also somehow clear. But they also often complain here about declining sales – despite expensive ads.
Maybe ads aren't quite optimal after all and will somehow be improved. Ad rates up to 100% can theoretically be selected; that's absurd.

·10 months agoWho’s forcing you, as a “private” VK, to run ads? ? @elfenblau-vogel

·10 months agoWhere does eBay even show that? Isn’t that all eBay itself, just to get a commission.
Then the commission for eBay would have to be higher than the purchase/selling price.
