eBay Germany. The pioneer of the circular economy in e-commerce celebrates its 25th anniversary
Dear sellers,
our online marketplace is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Over the past decades, eBay has shaped online commerce with the sale of pre-loved products like no other company. Launched as an auction house in 1999, eBay today counts several tens of thousands of merchants and 18 million buyers in Germany. It is the many personal stories of the sellers and their items that make the marketplace so special and diverse. “We are right in the middle of German life,” says the new Managing Director Dr. Saskia Meier-Andrae, whose hands the company has been in for 3 months. A key element of the business strategy remains the successful trade in pre-loved products, refurbished items, and non-new goods. “The true value of a product often only becomes apparent in its second life,” says Saskia Meier-Andrae. “More and more people share this understanding - and are rediscovering eBay for themselves.” Refurbished and pre-loved products accounted for 40 percent of sales globally on the eBay trading platform in the first quarter of 2024. The technical advancement of the platform and the programs for business growth are intended to inspire more and more sellers for eBay.
Our podcast hosts Lisa and Isabell took the anniversary as an opportunity to invite Saskia Meier-Andrae for a conversation. They introduce the new Managing Director and ask her about plans and new technologies for the platform that are intended to make our merchants' businesses even more successful in the future. They talk about the great importance of the partnership-based relationship with the merchants for shared economic success. “The effect of these investments is also noticeable,” says Saskia Meier-Andrae. “The merchants I have met so far, even though it's only been 100 days, are passionate about eBay.”
We hope we've piqued your curiosity about the anniversary podcast episode and wish you lots of fun listening. Listen to the podcast now
