Good morning @steffi@ebay and co....
Would there be a way to prevent thread starters from marking their own posts as
accepted solutions, because that really doesn't make much sense......
....although I do think many people believe that clicking it closes the thread
...

If it’s not intended for you to mark yourself as the accepted answer, then it shouldn’t be possible.
When I first started here, I marked all the answers as accepted, because all the answers contained
helpful tips. Of course I don’t do that anymore now.
One solution would also be to post a message thanking people for the help and
if there were any further questions, then you’d get back in touch.

There’s a reason why users are asked to mark a thread as solved
when they’ve gotten a satisfactory answer to their problem.
I guess the main argument for the community management is a better overview,
so they can see which requests may still need attention, and of course people seeking advice
can find their way around much better, because they can then immediately see that there are already solutions for their issue.....if I get 10 threads suggested for my question when searching,
it makes sense to read the threads marked as solved first...
And that’s exactly why the person asking the question shouldn’t be able to mark their own posts as the solution, whether by mistake or out of the hope that threads will be closed this way or that no further unpleasant replies can be posted for the OP....

sounds nice, but it’s very unrealistic, your idea...most people can’t even manage a "hello" or "good day" .....
And what exactly would that be a solution to in the topic I mentioned? Just writing something doesn’t trigger a marker in the system..... as I said, there’s a reason behind all this.....

A possible reason, when someone wraps up their own thread with a post and marks it as “solved”:
Author has had enough of ongoing chatter that doesn’t relate to the topic, but instead gets lost in speculation and responds with nastiness or even insults.
Or of people who just reply unnecessarily to a “bad” post with a thumbs-up smiley (thumbs could be used for that too). Empty 3-word posts bloat a thread unnecessarily; it’s annoying to scroll through every reply only to then realize - most of it is .
But self-discipline seems to be a rare trait within the community.
And now: on bonsai1003 with a roar! [ - whoever feels like it. Or: just pause for a moment (what’s it doing for me)].

1) The thing is that in a thread, even if a post is marked as the solution,
people can still keep writing normally... which you can
see here
2) the point here is that someone can mark their own post/contribution as the solution
, which is basically pointless
3) you're doing right now exactly what you call out in others: you're posting off topic right now,
to put your own feelings front and center.
4) anyone who wants to can reply to my post... including with smileys 😉

·2 years agoI'd start by looking at myself first and foremost. There are already enough posts from you where one can read that very clearly, in case you've forgotten - and they haven't been deleted yet: there were quite a few of those too.

·2 years agoI could imagine that the OP actually just wanted to mark their thread as solved.
Some of them marked their last post, in which they also thank for the help, as the solution.
It’s probably more of a misunderstanding.

Malice and insults are absolutely not okay. I read
how you were treated. And how the (niceties ) were even

Maybe closing your thread is an option for you?

I’m not making digs, I’m being straightforward.
I wrote about digs in another thread.
In a different context.
I think Steffi will definitely find a solution,
for how you can turn off your own greening.
