Either only "you" or only "you"

In this form, "New message" for a forum, placeholder texts in input fields and elsewhere on the page sometimes use "you" in the informal form and sometimes the formal form. Please use one consistently!

It’s nice to read such a question/comment/request

and know that it also makes people

think about it sometimes 🙂

While we’re at it: It bothers me when Du is written in lowercase.

It’s allowed now, of course, if no one is

being addressed personally and even then.

But I find it more polite when I address another person,

with a capital Du. "Hey dude, can you just",

even there.

What also gives me the creeps: greetings with "LG" from people,

whom I’ve never had any contact with. The LG comes from

"liebe Grüße" and when it comes from people I

don’t know, it feels presumptuous, intrusive, somehow

icky to me. Would be fine if I’d already herded pigs

and drunk with that person. But like this?

Then I always want to reply with "Yes, sweetie, I can send it."

Or would "Snugglebug" be better? And then end with "Kisses"?

What gives this person the right to get so close to me with

"kind" regards? Another stalker? Yuck.

And if it’s supposed to be brief because of phone use, then a

MfG or just VG or, as Bach says, an SDG isn’t much longer.

Doesn’t matter! 🙂 That’s just old people grumbling 🙂

Hello @wollenhaben44, it really is pleasing to read such an inquiry, remark, or wish – it shows that you are thinking about how communication happens and what language can trigger in others 😊

I can very well understand that the capitalized You is important to you. Even if it is now grammatically correct to write "you" in lowercase – especially in impersonal texts – the capital "You" still comes across as much more respectful. It makes a subtle difference whether one is just writing or really addressing someone. And as you so nicely say: Even with "Hey bro, can you do that..." you can feel that someone is meant. So: thumbs up for the capital You! 👍

Your thoughts on greetings are also interesting – and honestly, quite amusingly described 😄. "LG" is indeed very common (however, I really dislike it when people don't even take the time to spell out words), but you're right: in a first contact it sometimes seems a little too familiar – almost as if you'd already sat together on the couch. A simple "VG" or even "MfG" comes across as more neutral.

Your comparison with "Schnuffi" and "Küsschen" made me smile – wonderfully exaggerated and it captures exactly the feeling that can arise with farewell phrases that seem out of place.

And yes, I confess: I am old too 😄 – so I may officially sign off that way as well. This "grumbling of old people," as you call it, often has substance after all – and contributions like these are exactly what enrich our community!

Anyway... nothing against it if you have suggestions; in most forums people use du anyway, although I know it like this: you also write a greeting beforehand sometimes, it's not strictly part of grammar or spelling, but it is part of general manners, right?
