"Members help members" should be "Mentors help members"
Summary: In a discussion about the effectiveness of the "Members helping members" forum, mmstore74 suggests renaming it to "Mentors helping members" to better reflect its actual purpose. deichchef wonders whether some of the people mentioned in the group are actually eBay employees and what their responsibilities are. Other participants, including petersmodellbahnstuebchen, perfect-sally, and dartshop_luggis_de, also join the conversation, which mostly consists of contributions that are not specified in any further detail.
Good morning everyone,
There is the section " Members help members" but only mentors can reply there and " help"
Why is that?
Then it should actually say " Mentors help members "
Kind regards and have a nice Sunday

My dears, since we are now drifting away from the original topic, I will now close this thread. This way, we want to avoid any further violations of 📋Our Community Netiquette📋from occurring.
The topic has already been discussed and clarified in detail, so everything important has been said at this point 👍
Many thanks to everyone involved for your contributions✨

Good morning Marc,
I can join your question.
After all, in a community with approx. 3 - 5 million users, the vast majority in the “Members help members” category are excluded because only eBay employees and mentors can reply.
I also do not want the suitable answers to be published via third parties, some of whom have their PMs blocked.
On the other hand, the community also gains nothing if you send the answer to the person asking via PM.
Best regards and have a pleasant start to the week.

·1 year agoHi,
maybe this isn't quite on topic, but I have a question.
The 3 @patrick@ebay, @miriam@ebay, @steffi@ebay
belong to this group, right? That's how I understood it anyway.
Are they direct employees of Ebay (i.e. staff) and are they
busy with this group all day long, or do they have other tasks too?
Don't mean to pry, it just has me curious.
Best

·1 year agoHi @deichchef
as far as I know / suspect, the 3 Ebay employees mentioned are working full-time on the entire forum. The other Ebay employees are, in my opinion, only available to the forum part-time. At least I think I read that somewhere once.

Hello Peter,no I definitely do not want to become a mentor and I just didn't know how to reply here at MhM and I simply didn't know that you first have to report somewhere to get the permission for it.
But then to write directly whether I have nothing else to complain about or to see whether eBay is changing something here just for me is Bu... Sh... and has nothing to do with expressing one's opinion, that's nonsense.
I just wanted to make a suggestionbecause how often do you read “Oh, I overlooked that or didn't see it” since you only skim something and if it says members help members, many people understand it to mean that “every” member can help.
I've also been around for a few days and am I experienced? I've been through a lot, both good and not so good, and you always learn something new, and how is a newbie supposed to know that they first need permission to be able to reply in the MhM forum if even I didn't know that.
I'm also being honest that it says thereQuestions here are answered only by our most experienced and active members and mentors. I've never noticed that, because I've never clicked on it....
...since I usually post in the commercial section and I only wanted to ask that because I would have liked to reply to something and it just wasn't possible and that it turned into a New Year's Eve party in June I wouldn't have thought, but as I said, you always learn something new.
And asking whether I was allowed to publish something was meant ironically, as if that would ever happen in a thousand years 😂

Hi Marc,
You can tell that not everyone can reply in MHM at the latest when you look for the "Reply" button.
In this area, it is reserved for mentors and eBay staff.
And you can see the info on who can reply there directly when you click on "Members help members" (cf. my screenshot in my first reply)

Peter, I know that now too thanks to you, I just didn’t know beforehand why it was like that, since I had never clicked on this " Button " and even then, I might have considered myself experienced and still not known why I couldn’t reply, you know what I mean? 😁

OP1 year agoHello Peter and I don't want to bother you with this, even if it seems like and is a bit childish,
@petersmodellbahnstuebchen you see, and I was just about to ask when exactly one counts as an experienced and very active user here, and as I read it, you have to get in touch with @steffi@ebay for that, I didn't know that and that's helpful.
I definitely didn't want to make such a big deal out of it here either, but help is help and stupid comments are just stupid comments.
But then I can also happily message @perfect-sally privately in future first to ask whether I may open the topic or not, so now I'll move on.
Have a nice Sunday😎

That’s not weird, it’s steered.
If users need help from eBay, one of the options is to get help from the community. Everyone who takes that route ends up in MhM.
So it’s not surprising that more requests come in there.
sunrise1605
·1 year agoI already understand that this is being deliberately steered that way.
“Funny” is just an expression, it doesn’t mean I’m surprised.
If users need help from eBay, there is, among other things, the option to receive help from the community. Everyone who takes this route ends up in the MhM.
Exactly, and the MhM is not the community, but rather a part of it.

Hi Marc,
besides the note from @kenn-i-di-1 you can also find further info about the mentor program here:
I was also interested in it at one point, but then decided against it, because due to the developments in recent years I would rather classify myself as critical of eBay and therefore wouldn’t necessarily see myself in this group (with a few exceptions).
But apart from that, there are no stupid comments in my opinion, just some that are off topic (by which I definitely do not mean Thomas @perfect-sally’s reply). But that’s just something you have to live with in a community like this. Here, hundreds / ????? of users come together who have different views on life, are somehow annoyed by eBay’s decisions, or simply have a question. So it’s no surprise when things occasionally get a bit heated.
And in my opinion, that is exactly what the MhM section was created for, namely to create a “quieter” platform, especially for inexperienced users.
You can see for yourself what discussions your post has triggered here. That would never have happened in the MhM section.
And whether you are allowed to publish a post here is decided not by @perfect-sally, other mentors, or users like you and me, but only by the moderators from Khoros, who may delete or edit the posts.
Kind regards from the Baltic Sea and have a nice Sunday as well

·1 year agoHello Marc@mmstore74 ,
I also spoke up about this very topic many moons ago🌜 🌛 because I was dissatisfied with an answer I had received before and I couldn’t reply to the original poster myself.
A staff reply afterwards was roughly: "it’s fine the way it is in the board"
I then chose the PM route as well and let the original poster know of another option, and also mentioned right away that unfortunately not everyone, but only selected people, could reply to him.
He saw it the same way as you and I do; this description "members help members" suggests that all community members reply and not just the aforementioned select few.
Yes Peter, @petersmodellbahnstuebchen I saw what you posted, but not everyone still looks at or reads what else is listed under "members help members" when they want quick help for their problem. (emotionally upset)
😀 Note to all those who are now interpreting the word "select" negatively. Let me say that I really appreciate your participation here and do not mean to belittle any of you with this word.

Hey Micha,
with the screenshot I posted, you really do have to read a lot. It appears immediately when you open the MhM board.
But well, since I’ve also been here for more than 2 weeks now, I read first before I write. For example, whether similar topics have already been discussed in that board and whether the answer to my "problem" has already been described there.
And I wouldn’t call the mentors "chosen ones," but rather, as the screenshot says, experienced and active members. Anyone who wants to take part here can always contact @steffi@ebay if they are willing to sacrifice their free time for the community. As far as I know, Ebay is very interested in recruiting more mentors for the forum.
Best regards from the Baltic Sea coast and likewise a lovely Sunday

·1 year agoHi Peter @petersmodellbahnstuebchen ,
I’m also happy to share my experience here in the community without being part of the mentor team. I already received information some time ago from steffi@ebay on how I can apply for this team.
Still, I believe that with the many well-read, well-informed, and articulate mentors here, there are enough members who can and want to work on the MhM board.
Since, as I already wrote, I sometimes ride the other wave too, I’m probably better off in the big bubble.
That’s less noticeable there if, because of something I phrase, I end up needing a moment to find my words.
Maybe in just under five and a half years I’ll be retired, my hobby dart shop still won’t have gone bust, and I’ll have become a little calmer too. Then I can apply for the mentor team and see what the feedback is. 😀

OP1 year ago@petersmodellbahnstuebchen what always bothers me here is that you ask a question and then you immediately get answers that the person could have just spared themselves
and besides, you have nothing else to complain about?

It wasn't a complaint but a suggestion, and I posted it under Suggestions and feedback for the eBay platform because, as @sunrise1605 writes, the term suggests something different than what it is.
And such allusions and stupid comments that eBay might change the board name just because I make a peep, you can and should just keep to yourself 😏like it or not.
*sweet-melody*
·1 year agoHello @mmstore74 !
*It wasn't a complaint, but rather a suggestion, and I also posted it under Suggestions and feedback for the eBay platform, because, as @sunrise1605 writes, the term suggests something different than it is.*
That's my opinion too. But I don't get worked up about it. Enough
people looking for help end up in the discussion forum. Even some who couldn't be helped in MhM,
which is no big deal. Who knows *EVERYTHING*?
Since I don't post in MhM, I rarely read there.
I also wouldn't contact the person looking for help through the back door
via PM. I'd rather make it public in the discussion forum
that I might have a solution to their
problem.
When I first came to eBay, MhM was a big topic.
And as a newcomer, I had the feeling that it divided the community into two
camps.
That hasn't changed to this day, because the topic keeps being brought up
again and again in between. In my eyes, it hasn't been good
for eBay.
Best regards

OP1 year agoHello everyone
@perfect-sally I always get the impression that you're always agro right away!😏
That's just my opinion, of course, and everyone has theirs, but let's leave it at that.
@petersmodellbahnstuebchen you wrote:
Here they just try to help right away, without everyone being able to stick their two cents in.
There are probably countless people, also "new" ones, who have problems and don't know this community, they are "new" after all, and if they then get problem x solved via phone support, only then become aware of this community, and then by chance this problem comes up here where even the most experienced and active ones do not have a solution READY RIGHT AWAY, because nobody is all-knowing, not even the most experienced and active ones, and as everyone knows, even Ebay staff sometimes have to ask around, and therefore I don't understand why that person, who would have the solution, shouldn't be allowed to reply to help DIRECTLY?
And one more thing, since everything here is being taken with a grain of salt, and if a question comes up that's total rubbish, then it should better say,
Here, questions are answered only by our most experienced and active members and mentors.
That's just my opinion, and now you can feel free to give me a hard time again because I don't have anything else to complain about.
petersmodellbahnstuebchen
·1 year ago@mmstore74
Hi Marc,
this has nothing to do with "being strict", but is just my opinion on why, in this forum, the answers are reserved for the mentors and eBay employees.
I have also sometimes had the situation where I had a solution, but couldn't mention it in the post.
1. most eBay members can be contacted by PM
2. you can also message certain eBay employees by PM, who can then place this "solution" in the post as well.
And if eBay is of the opinion that mentors are the most experienced and active members, then so be it.
Kind regards from the Baltic Sea
Peter

Hi Marc,
as you can see, I’ve also been part of the team for a few days now and I reply in the MhM. Besides the mentors, Ebay staff can of course also reply here if the mentors involve them.
And after a few days working in this forum, I can only say that things are much calmer and more objective here than in the other areas of the forum, precisely because not every user can jump into every discussion with their own ideas / problems.
And if someone has a great idea for help, they can always message a mentor. However, it is up to that person to decide whether the idea makes sense.

,I could have helped directly too, since I created this topic some time ago as well and the error was found with me, but unfortunately I couldn't reply there,You now what i mean ?
petersmodellbahnstuebchen
·1 year ago@mmstore74
Hey Marc,
I know what you mean.
But this area is there precisely to give the questioners a "protected space", i.e. not everyone can reply here. That creates trust for many members who fear their "problems" would be laughed at by everyone and dismissed as nonsense. Unfortunately, that happens often enough in the public forum.
The combined knowledge across the entire forum is extremely important. If you know a solution, you can always send a PM to a mentor, provided they allow that, or present the solution again in the public forum by simply bumping the post back to the top. All mentors would certainly be grateful to you for that.
petersmodellbahnstuebchen
·1 year ago@mmstore74
Hi Marc,
just write to me if you have a good idea for a solution. I’ll take a look at it and, of course, I would publish the possible solution in MhM with a source reference, because I don’t want to claim others’ ideas as my own. And I think that applies to the other mentors too.
I myself used this exact approach earlier and contacted someone who has access to this area, whether an Ebay employee or a mentor.
Some tips were gladly accepted and published there as well.

That’s the next problem, which I had already opened as a topic here once and which I think I tried to solve back then with @steffi@ebay
If I want to message someone, whether a mentor, eBay staff, or another member, I very often get “You have exceeded the limit for private messages today, please try again later.” although I hadn’t written a single message that day and even if I’m supposed to reply to a message from an EM, this happens, so that’s not a solution either. But it’s all good, I now know the background.

Hi Marc,
I had that message about the number of private messages too. But that's a different issue and has nothing to do with the topic of this post MhM. The eBay staff also keep recommending that you stay with the original topic so the whole thing stays clear and easy to follow. I feel the same way when I see that, because of so many posts, it's hardly possible to tell anymore which problem is actually supposed to be solved. And honestly, I always try to respond to the original poster's initial question and not also answer other members' questions.
All I can recommend is to bring the original thread back up to the top if this happens again. @steffi@ebay will certainly take care of it then.
Besides, you know how you can contact me or some of the other mentors.
Have a nice weekend too

·1 year agoGood morning, @petersmodellbahnstuebchen 🙂 I have not been reachable via PM for years, and I also forbid contact attempts via the eBay system.
I have also helped questioners that way when they could no longer find their thread, or even one of my buyers, but otherwise I don't need any more messages in my eBay account either!
PMs are off because unfortunately some people couldn't resist insulting me, threatening me, etc. It's not without reason that many MHM members do the same.
And unfortunately... things like this still keep happening, with vile insults directed at members of MHM, where people are really going for the gutter through the eBay system.😎
Everyone is free to handle it however they want, with PMs or inquiries through the system.

Hi Marc,
I don't understand what's supposed to be wrong with the board title.
Right from the start, it already points out which Ebay members these are, namely the most experienced and active ones.
I suppose this was deliberately designed by Ebay to make it easier for new and inexperienced Ebayers to access support. Here they’re trying to help directly, without everyone being able to add their two cents.
In addition, every member can start a post here and ask for support, so you and I too.
Best wishes from the Baltic Sea and likewise a lovely Sunday

·1 year agoI don't understand what could be wrong with the board title.
It is wrong in the sense that the mentors are not the community ("Help from the community"), but rather part of it.
Whether "Mentors help members" would change anything, who knows, probably not.
steffi@ebay
Hello Marc @mmstore74, to be honest: I can only agree with Peter @petersmodellbahnstuebchen.
Mentors in the eBay Community are members who are particularly committed and, with their experience and knowledge, offer real added value to others. For example, they help with questions, actively join in discussions, or share helpful tips – in short: they help shape the community in a lively and constructive way.
Despite this special commitment, they remain completely normal members like you and me. That is why, from my point of view, it is absolutely understandable that the area continues to be listed under the general designation "Members". The role of mentor is simply an additional distinction, not a separate status.

"Help from the Community" doesn’t exactly suggest a handful of chosen ones 😊
(yeah, I know, it’s 2 handfuls 😄)
"Discussion", on the other hand, sounds like a general chat with little factual knowledge or expertise behind it, and not like real help from the Community.
It’s very deliberately designed and titled that way.
And no, you don’t need to sharpen your swords, this isn’t meant as a dig at the mentors.
