Outbid after time ran out???
Summary: stefo-8358 reports an allegedly illegitimate auction experience in which he was outbid despite placing a successful bid. He suspects the use of illegal software. Other participants in the discussion, including voli-maus and perfect-sally, explain that late bids placed shortly before the end of an auction can still be processed by the platform, and that this is not unusual. petersmodellbahnstuebchen and vera@ebay agree and explain that technical reasons make this plausible. stefo-8358 remains skeptical, especially regarding the item number, while others point out that every item has one. The discussion ends without the misunderstanding being clarified.
Hello,
I just had another experience of the “third kind” while bidding.
After I successfully placed a bid, and the item was awarded to me, I was subsequently outbid after the bidding time had expired, and I did not receive the item (see my bid below).
How is that possible? I suspect illegal software is at work here. Does anyone know anything about this? Regards, Stefan

in fact, the auction started on 23 Jul 2026 at 19:59:01 - with the bid coming in at 19:59:01, the buyer made a perfect landing

Mentor1 week agoHello @stefo-8358 ,
thank you very much for your post. It’s exactly as @petersmodellbahnstuebchen already mentioned. If bids are placed so close to the end of the auction, the system needs a moment to process that.
@petersmodellbahnstuebchen thank you very much for the tag 😊
Kind regards
Vera

Mentor1 week agoEvery item has an item number, and when you’ve placed a bid you can also open the listing and see the item number.
Without that, we can’t view the listing or the bidding history.

Mentor1 week agoHi @stefo-8358
even if you don't want to mention item number 147451794199, the last bid was placed at 19:59:01:
That's not unusual, which is why at the end of the auction there's usually also the note that the highest bidder is still being determined. That way, eBay also takes into account the bids placed shortly before the end of the auction.
Best wishes from the Baltic Sea

OP1 week agoThere is a misunderstanding here. The auction ended at 19.59.00, so it should no longer be possible to place a bid after that. Best regards
petersmodellbahnstuebchen
Mentor1 week ago@stefo-8358
that’s not a misunderstanding, but the normal procedure on Ebay when bids are placed shortly before the deadline.
That’s also why Ebay says that the highest bidder is still being determined.
Dear @vera@ebay can gladly correct me if I’m wrong. Thanks, Vera. ❤️
Best wishes from the Baltic Sea

OP1 week agoYes, but not after closing time!!

OP1 week agoHow did you find out the item number? This is only shown on the invoice to the auction winner, not in the listing. Best regards
petersmodellbahnstuebchen
Mentor1 week agoThe article number is stored in every quote and visible to everyone.

Nonsense! Every item has an item number and everyone can see it.
What you mean is maybe the order number, but that wasn't what was asked.

the auction ended at 19:59:01 because that was also the start time (I'll leave out the invisible hundredths of a second for now)
as soon as a bid has been placed in an auction, you will see the starting price and the start time in the bid overview under the 1st bid

Mentor1 week agoWell, you name a lot of dates here, but you’re not naming the most important thing! Without knowing the article, no one can say anything about it here.
And automatic bids are not forbidden, and your assumption falls flat!
stefo-8358
OP1 week agoItem without number (see above)
And the point is to follow the rules; automatic bids should also be placed within the set time frame. Do you work for eBay?
perfect-sally
Mentor1 week agoAgain, there are no listings without an item number! And we’re a community here and just ordinary users like you, not eBay employees and not AI, in case that was your next question 😏
And whether rules weren’t followed here can only be said if you can view the listing and then the bidding history.

OP1 week agoNo article number without surcharge!
I’ve now gotten this separately from the provider. By the way, the item hasn’t been paid for yet, so I suspect a bot or fraud.
