eBay illegally withholds money from sales
Summary: beiweitem reports negative experiences with an online marketplace, where money from sales is being withheld for days without authorization. After a sale of over €800, they were required to update bank details even though nothing had changed. Customer service recommended shipping the item despite the money being held back. In addition, beiweitem is considering a possible class action, as this could appear to be a systematic practice to profit from sales proceeds.
Hey, I’ve been selling on eBay for about 20 years now and, unfortunately, I have to watch not only customer service getting worse, but also new “tools” being introduced that allow the company to unlawfully hold money from sales for days.
I was supposed to update bank details (which had never changed), right after a sale for €800.
After smaller amounts, the bank account did not need to be updated. In this way, eBay has access to the money for days, which the company is not entitled to, since with the new debit, the proceeds no longer go directly into the seller’s account, but into the eBay account.
As of now, I have not received the money, even beyond the stated “48 hours security time” that eBay specifies.
When I asked, customer service advised me, even though the money is not yet in my account but is being held by eBay, to ship the item and simply mark it “as shipped.” (A farce)
If this happens more often, one could consider a class action, because this looks like a clear strategy to work with the proceeds from sales.

Of course you only get your money once you’ve shipped it, entered the tracking number, and a delivery confirmation shows that the item has arrived.
And even then.... the buyer has 30 days to activate buyer protection.
Besides, even long-time members, including commercial sellers, have to verify their bank details since eBay took over payment processing.
You already silently agreed to all of that, after all.
