eBay scam with shipping labels

eBay has thrown out all providers except DHL and Post for buying shipping labels (probably because they didn’t offer the terms).
I’m also aware that Deutsche Post no longer carries private parcel shipments abroad.
But when printing a label for a sale to Italy, the entire Deutsche Post portfolio was suggested, including large letter. So I thought they’d negotiated special terms and bought the label.
The Deutsche Post office here in the shop accepted it too, but apparently at the international shipping center they scan the eBay labels and send them back with a nasty note about violating the terms and conditions.
eBay is now refusing to reimburse it; after all, I could have looked into it. To me, that borders pretty strongly on systematic fraud, because these labels actually shouldn’t be offered for shipping goods — they are definitely described incorrectly. The new Deutsche Post terms and conditions haven’t only been around for a week either.
Has anyone actually managed to get their money back? I probably could also go after Deutsche Post, since they accepted it in the first place, so it’s not something I can be blamed for.
All in all, of course, it’s not worth suing over 10 euros. International trade just has its quirks, there’s always some shrinkage 🙂
But maybe someone has already done this without any hassle?
I can’t be the first person this has happened to. Any grandma who knows nothing about it would probably have exactly this large-letter registered item printed out on eBay.

so for me, Ebay also offers Hermes alongside DHL and Deutsche Post:
And the fact that goods have not been allowed to be sent by letter for a long time should by now be common knowledge.

OP2 months agoNo idea why that still works for you. When I activate the drop-down menu "Select shipping provider", I only get DP and DHL. If I don't check anything at all (so I ignore the menu, as I've always done so far), there are still only DP and DHL in the list further down with the products.

Mentor2 months agoI never enter anything up top for dimensions and weight - at least not back when I used to frank everything through eBay. Nowadays I do everything with the respective shipping provider since I decide myself how to pay.
But when I open the shipping preparation, I get this at the bottom: Compare all services, and there are tons to choose from.

OP2 months agoIt used to be the same for me too. No dimensions entered, “compare all services” at the bottom, and no measurements/specific carrier selected, then at least Hermes and DHL/DP always came up.
I only use PCs with a web browser for eBay (different ones), completely normal, no form aids. For a few weeks now, it’s been the case that only DP/DHL comes up when I “compare all services” and otherwise don’t enter any dimensions/weight for the parcel.
In the listing, the buyer was shown “Hermes”; normally I stick to that too, I was just too lazy before Pentecost to drive over there separately. For the customer abroad it doesn’t matter anyway, since Hermes often ships with the local post office or someone else. They don’t know Hermes then.

OP2 months agoI’m taking the completely normal sales form, where you have to do everything yourself. Not the shortened one, where you get to the sales listing in a few steps.
When creating the offers, shipping options, I can also choose from -tons of shipping providers (I had selected Hermes for shipping outside the EU).
It’s just about buying the label via eBay with seller credit. Only the postal service is available there. I was in a hurry and didn’t research beforehand whether the post office would even accept that, even if eBay sells it and the post office agency takes it.
You also can’t accuse the customer of negligence when eBay offers exactly this label for this auction shipment. I really don’t see the customer having any obligation there.
By the way, the postal service says: My contractual partner is eBay, they don’t pay anything at all. Legally, you’d first have to untangle who can actually be sued for damages, but it’s not worth it to me for 10eur, I have other hobbies. Even though two corporations are really taking it easy here at the consumer’s expense, because this case definitely comes up a few times a day.

OP2 months agoWell, then why can’t I print the label on eBay? None of this is consistent. Or as someone said right at the beginning here: Do it all without eBay, just the way it makes sense 🙂

Mentor2 months agoSo I can see a lot of options for international shipping. And by now everyone should know that no goods may be sent abroad as/ in a letter. Lately, the service provider apparently seems to be checking more strictly, from what one hears.
And yes, every shipper already has to know what may and may not be sent and how. eBay will show no leniency there.

OP2 months agoSo I sell privately and only see Deutsche Post and DHL. On "Packlink" there are still a few odd ones, but that doesn't help out here in the countryside and anyway it's not conveniently billed through eBay. Actually, I have "Hermes" listed in my auctions for overseas, but I didn't get around to going there last week.
But that's really cheeky of eBay, to offer a shipping method like that when they know the money is gone.

I generally don't use eBay shipping service.
I log in to DHL, where I have a customer account, and their shipping options are available to me accordingly under the terms and conditions.
After printing the label, all shipments are in my account and I can, if I want to, track the progress.
Payment is conveniently made via PayPal, which apparently isn't possible on eBay anymore either.

...and to what extent is this answer actually helpful if you follow eBay's wishes and use their shipping service?
That’s almost as sensible as the suggestion “contact the seller after the auction and arrange your own payment methods”
Sorry, but your suggestion may be the most effective method, but it’s not helpful here. I also can’t be bothered to constantly have to think about how I can get around eBay. I might as well go to [not on eBay] straight away.

You’ve been registered here on eBay for 16 years, and you should actually know how eBay has handled payment processing and seller protection since then.

Eligibility
The seller is covered by eBay as long as the following conditions are met.
Item not received
If a buyer reports an item as “not received,” the seller is covered under the following conditions:
The seller shipped the item within the stated handling time and informed the buyer of the tracking details within 3 business days after the request was opened. This does not apply to preordered or custom-made goods, for which shipping within the time period stated in the listing is required.
The seller shipped the item to the address specified in the eBay checkout. Seller protection does not apply if the item was picked up by the buyer or if the seller delivered the item themselves or shipped it to an address other than the one stated in the purchase details.
The seller must provide proof of timely successful delivery (“proof of delivery”).
Proof of delivery
A “proof of delivery” must contain the following information:
the shipping provider’s tracking number, the delivery status “Delivered” (or equivalent, depending on the country to which the item was delivered)
date of delivery
name and address of the recipient matching the details in “Purchase details”
name and address of the sender
The seller authorizes eBay to access the shipping information from the relevant shipping carrier in order to verify shipment of an item and, if necessary, grants eBay access to this information.
If eBay cannot track the shipment status using the online tracking number in accordance with the terms of this policy because the shipping information is no longer available online, submitting an online tracking number as proof of delivery is not sufficient.

Packlink shouldn't matter to you, since it's only usable by businesses, just like DHL's small parcel, for example
normally, though, the common shipping methods / carriers should be available for you to choose in the sales form, provided you haven't activated any conditions
when shipping via eBay, additional shipping methods should also be able to be displayed, although I can't explain exactly where, since I'm not currently offering anything
... and if I were to do the latter again, I would frank it directly via Post / DHL

OP2 months agoI specifically looked into it last week because I’d already noticed over the past few weeks that with the shipping suggestions you can only choose DeutschePost/DHL anymore. At the beginning of the year that was still possible.
Before, you could still select "all products"; then the Hermes stuff was included too, regardless of the weight class or what you had listed in the auction.
This has already been discussed in some forums, and it apparently turned out that they couldn’t agree with Hermes on the commissions. The deciding factor was probably that Hermes didn’t want to guarantee "overnight" (1-day shipping time in 90%) as bindingly. ebay apparently wants that in its profile.
But otherwise, of course, they are liable for damages, because they suggested that exact shipping product (registered letter by post) for my sale after I entered the size, and they also didn’t include any disclaimer saying that this was only a non-binding postal catalog.
That still isn’t fraud in an individual case, of course (at most if one could prove systematic action despite knowing better), but it’s simply **bleep**. And any judge would award damages there.
But honestly... for 10eur? My time is too valuable for that 🙂 Unfortunately, you can’t get rich off a damages claim here (unlike in other countries). It would probably be quite helpful for consumer protection sometimes.
