Ebay- Threatening account closure on someone else’s account
Summary: yello02 received a message from eBay about the possible closure of an account he doesn’t seem to know. The message appears to be genuine, but he’s worried because the link in the message points to his actual account. perfect-sally suspects it could be an account created via Facebook or Google and recommends contacting customer service. mia@ebay confirms that only information about the account used here may be provided and advises logging in directly on the eBay site instead of using the email link.
I received a message from ebay with the subject: "Please log in if you want to keep your eBay account". In it says that my account will be closed soon because I haven’t used it for a while.
a) I don’t have an account with the name ebay mentioned
b) the message definitely comes from ebay
c) the account looks SIMILAR to an email address of mine .....about 75%
d) the strange thing is. If I click on a link in the message that says "please contact us", I get directed to MY actual account.
Something’s not right here. Of course it would be a shame if my real ebay account, which I’ve had for 20 years, were deleted.
It’s difficult to get in touch with someone directly at ebay.
How can I sort this out now?

OP5 days agoOk... I was able to delete my unneeded ... apparently randomly created account. Thanks a lot for the help

many thanks for your post. It is exactly as @perfect-sally already wrote. We can only provide information about the account reported here.
You wrote that you received a message about this account. Please try logging into this account once. A password request should again arrive in your email inbox. Please do not log in via the link in the email, but go directly to the eBay site to log in.
I also suspect that you may once have bought something as a guest or through another account. If you do not know the account and no longer use it, it may still make sense to delete the account or have it deleted.

Mentor6 days agoI’m guessing you logged in at some point via Facebook, Google...etc. and created a new account that way.
Does that mean you can’t log in to the “other” account at all to delete it?
I’m afraid we can’t help with that here and you’ll need to contact customer service and discuss it with them personally. No information can be given here about other accounts besides the one you’re writing from. Contact info can be found in the legal notice.
But I’ll still tag an ebay MA who can tell you more about it. She’ll reply here.
