eBay (supposedly) adds VAT on private sales even though I only ship within Germany
Summary: bevauge reports an issue where eBay has added a charge to both the sale and shipping price of a used audiobook, claiming it is a VAT issue. Despite selling privately within Germany and typically not facing VAT, they encounter this charge only for one specific item. perfect-sally suggests it might be due to the item being recognized as a digital medium, while vera@ebay from eBay suggests changing the listing's format to better classify the physical CDs. bevauge attempts the recommended changes but does not see results, deciding instead to offer VAT reimbursement to the buyer.
Dear community,
for the first time this has happened to me: eBay adds an extra charge to an item I’m offering — in this case a used audiobook — on both the item price and the shipping costs. I called eBay and the person on the phone said it was VAT.....
I then asked Google about it too. There I’m told that this only happens with commercial sellers or with shipping abroad.
Since 2002 I’ve been buying and selling privately, I’ve never had to pay tax on anything and this year I’m still below the tax office threshold.
Also, I only ship within Germany and my place of residence is also in Germany......
It’s also only this one item that gets an extra charge - on the actual final price and the postage - with other items I listed later, there’s nothing again.
When listing, I make sure to a) only ship within Germany b) point out that I’m a private seller.
Do you have any idea what that’s about?
Thanks for any explanation, bevauge

Mentor3 weeks ago@bevauge it does seem to be the case here that our system recognizes the article as a digital medium and therefore charges VAT on it. Please try changing the format in the article attributes from audiobook to CD or CD box so that our system recognizes it correctly.
Best regards

OP3 weeks agoDear Vera, I changed everything - instead of audiobook 8 CDs in box, removed the ISBN, listed it under "Books"......Unfortunately nothing changes with the VAT entry......I’m now doing it so that in the offer I assure the buyer that the VAT will be refunded by me after purchase. Many thanks for your help, Beate

Mentor3 weeks ago@bevauge I took a look at the offer for you. Can you tell me where you saw a surcharge in the form of an additional price?
Best regards

OP3 weeks agoUnfortunately I can't upload a picture.
The offer starts at 5.99 (auction), behind it there appears added by eBay 0.42 VAT - buy now price 0.70 VAT
The shipping costs are 2.90 - there it appears changed by eBay to 3.10

Mentor3 weeks agoFor digital items, ebay has to collect the VAT!

OP3 weeks agoHello perfekt-sally, many thanks for your support.
It consists of 8 CDs, so it's not digital.
Also selling other audiobooks from the same series

Mentor3 weeks agoOf course, a CD is a digital storage medium. An ebay MA can take a look at that.
Hello @vera@ebay could you please take a look? Thanks a lot
