eBay seller delivers the wrong item and acts weird
Summary: dienaei reports an unusual eBay transaction in which they received a more expensive Switch game instead of the PS4 game they bought. The seller explains the incident as a mistake, but suggests settling the matter privately, which makes dienaei skeptical. gebraucht-ist-gut and bootyooty advise handling the transaction through eBay, not agreeing to any private arrangement, and opening a return process to get the purchase price refunded. Both emphasize that privacy regulations prohibit sharing addresses directly.
Hello everyone, I’m currently dealing with a weird situation with a private eBay seller and would really appreciate some advice. I bought a PS4 game for €10, but instead I received a Nintendo Switch cartridge (Pokémon Pokopia) worth about €40. The seller claims she accidentally mixed up two packages, which can happen, but the whole transaction was EXTREMELY weird from the start.
First of all, shipping took forever. Exactly one day after the official delivery deadline had passed, she messaged me, apologized for the delay, and said it should arrive in the next 2 days, even though according to the tracking nothing had even been sent yet, not even days later. It took another 8 days before it finally arrived.
When the package finally arrived, the eBay shipping label was literally taped onto the package with four bandages, and her original eBay address had been crossed out by hand and overwritten with a new address. Inside was only the bare, unprotected Switch cartridge, even though the item she sold for this game clearly showed it complete with the original case and brand new, sealed in plastic wrap.
Now she wants to sort it out outside of eBay. First she asked whether the other buyer and I could just send the items directly to each other, which I رفضed. Now she’s asking for my email address so she can send me a return label for her “new” address, because the one on eBay is apparently her old one. This is all getting way too much for me and I’m feeling overwhelmed. Some sources say I can just ignore her, but I’m a bit scared of that.
I’d honestly just rather keep Pokopia and be done with this chaos; the other buyer can just open a case for “item not as described.” Why should we clean up HER own mess? This has been the worst transaction I’ve had on eBay so far.

Mentor3 days agoHey @dienaei honestly: Vk is making it pretty easy for itself.... it’s not allowed to pass on other people’s data, and that has nothing to do with both parties agreeing to it anyway, data protection applies.
Maybe years ago it was different, but I wouldn’t agree to anything and would report a differing item; the seller has to send you a return label, you send it back and get a refund.
I can also understand that you want as little hassle as possible, but keep in mind that the other buyer definitely wants their item and wouldn’t think it was okay if you just kept it and they only got their money back instead of the item they’re legally entitled to.

OP3 days agoHey hey, definitely, but in this case everything is so unbelievably strange. I’m also afraid that if I send the game back again, I’ll be accused of having taken the case out of it. This is a very small private seller and she had really only listed a few items online (maybe around 6). With the Switch 2 game I got, the case should actually have been included and it was still in new packaging. I specifically filtered through her already sold items, and it was actually this game for the Switch 2 that was sold during the same period, but complete with case and not just the loose cartridge that arrived at my place... I’ll see how the case develops and will give an update if needed.

Mentor3 days agoHello @dienaei ,
making mistakes now and then is human.
It’s happened to me too that I mixed up items.
I was actually able to clarify it exactly between the customers, just as your seller suggested.
Asked both sides in advance whether the address data could be shared and then reimbursed them for the postage.
It’s always a gut decision.
In your case, though, my gut says: open a return for wrong item.
The seller has to send you a return label and then you’ll get the purchase price refunded. Done.
Just don’t try to sort anything out outside eBay here, I’d have a weird gut feeling about that.
Now she suddenly wants to change the return address too?
That could make one suspect that this is then the address of the correct buyer.
So open a return case - anything else just causes more headaches.
