Authenticity check
Summary: 1stepp1 had concerns because the authenticity check expected when buying an expensive Junghans watch on eBay was missing. meinehexe11 and other participants explained that there could be issues when listing items with an authenticity guarantee and that the check is not always carried out automatically. selina_b@ebay confirmed that the watch was sent directly to 1stepp1 without being checked. petersmodellbahnstuebchen recommended having the watch checked by a jeweler. In the end, the problem was resolved, the invoice arrived, and 1stepp1 thanked everyone for their support.
Recently I bought a brand-new Junghans watch worth just over €2,000. Now it says that eBay would check such watches for authenticity and issue a certificate for them. But I did not receive this with the delivery of the watch. What could be the reason for that?

OP3 weeks agoThe problem has now been satisfactorily resolved and I thank everyone who listened to me and helped me, and wish you a nice weekend.
However, I don't know how I can close the thread, since it's now resolved! Could someone please help me again with how I can do that?

Mentor3 weeks agoHi, hi.
all good and fine that you could be helped. You can't delete it. Everything stays in the archive, in case another user has the same problem and wants to read up on it.

OP3 weeks agoThanks, but how do I get away from the "Not solved yet" status?

You can do it, but you don't have to.

OP3 weeks agoThanks to you. I hope I did everything right; after all, this was my first stay and thread here. Have a nice weekend and best regards, Harald

Hello @1stepp1 ,
Thank you very much for your post.
The item was sent directly to you by your seller and not to an authenticity checker.
@bootyooty Thanks a lot for the tag 😘
Kind regards
Selina

OPSep 9, 2026 at 4:04 PMThanks, Selina. Is that really common when it comes to such an expensive watch and it says that eBay would verify such watches for authenticity? Did the seller perhaps not handle things correctly if they deliberately avoided eBay's verification?
selina_b@ebay
@1stepp1 Nothing can be verified if it isn't sent to the authenticity checker. As was already written to you further below.
After all, this whole thing isn't mandatory either; the seller can choose whether to sell through it or not.
Kind regards
Selina

OPSep 9, 2026 at 4:37 PMThanks, Selina. Apparently the seller didn't want that, for whatever reason.
Are there any more inconsistencies with this seller? If you can't rely on eBay to make sure that such a valuable item is genuine and verified, it becomes hard to order goods like this through eBay. I probably won't do it anymore, because I now also don't know whether my watch is really genuine or not, and so I'm very unsure whether I may have fallen for a scammer. If I were eBay, I'd take a closer look at this dealer to protect other customers from possible harm! For me, it's probably too late now.

MentorSep 9, 2026 at 6:30 PM · EditedHi @1stepp1
wait and see what else turns up here on Ebay first.
If I were you, I’d first go to a jeweler / watch dealer you trust and have the watch checked for authenticity. Then go to the police and file a fraud report.
Best regards from the Baltic Sea

OP3 weeks agoHello Peter,
thanks for your reply. Do you think there will be any response from eBay? Does eBay already know about the matter, or do I first need to initiate something, and if so, how? So far, by and large I’ve had good experiences with eBay, even when buying higher-priced items. I also didn’t receive an invoice, I’ve realized. I’ll write to Mr. Beckering, the seller, about that and ask him for one. That’s customary with a commercial seller.
In any case, many thanks to you and
with warm regards from the Rhineland as well
Harald

OP3 weeks agoMany thanks to all of you who listened to me and replied. The problem has since been resolved, and thanks to your help I was able to retrace and understand the issue with the authenticity check that did not take place, especially since your statements match the seller's account! The invoice has just arrived here as well, and it's perfectly OK.
Once again, my heartfelt thanks to all of you and have a pleasant weekend, as well as kind regards Harald

MentorSep 9, 2026 at 2:52 PMHey @selina_b@ebay 😘 can you look into which item this is about?
1stepp1
OPSep 9, 2026 at 3:06 PMhttps://www.ebay.de/itm/168111792577 for this watch.

MentorSep 9, 2026 at 3:09 PMThanks, but even there I get the error message from eBay when it has been deleted.
Can you still open the item @1stepp1 ? I can't.

MentorSep 9, 2026 at 3:12 PMCould it be that you bought it outside Germany @1stepp1 ?
In that case, there is no authenticity check.

Items that are not authenticity checked
Even if an offer is marked with a checkmark for “With authenticity check,” items are excluded from the authenticity check if the following applies:
Your delivery address is outside the EU*
* Some regions within the EU are also excluded as delivery addresses from the authenticity check.
You do not complete the checkout and do not pay on eBay.
You buy the item on an eBay website where no authenticity check is available for your location (e.g. eBay.com).
The seller sends the item directly to you and not to the authenticity verifier.

OPSep 9, 2026 at 3:40 PMNo, the supplier's address is Hanover and I live in Hürth.

OPSep 9, 2026 at 3:43 PMOh yeah, the link https://www.ebay.de/itm/168111792577 was still working 5 seconds ago.

MentorSep 9, 2026 at 1:48 PMHi @1stepp1 it would be useful if you could provide the item number or order number.
I had guessed this one
167419482834
Unfortunately, nothing is accessible from the seller anymore... as if eBay had deleted all the sold items.

MentorSep 9, 2026 at 12:35 PMHi, hi. There are/were problems when listing items with authenticity verification. I think your item got caught up in that, and there was no authenticity verification.
@nina@ebay right?
1stepp1
OPSep 9, 2026 at 12:51 PMThanks for the quick reply. The watch listed wasn’t explicitly marked at the top as having authenticity verification, but I had assumed that eBay would always verify such offers for watches of this value.
meinehexe11
MentorSep 9, 2026 at 12:56 PMThat’s usually the case. For some items, there is an automatic check:

OPSep 9, 2026 at 1:05 PMThanks. I looked into what eBay says about authenticity checks, and with my watch, which cost more than € 2000,–, I fall right into that category. So why wasn’t the watch checked then? The seller couldn’t tell me anything specific about it (or didn’t want to?).
