Disappointing eBay customer service – specific questions are repeatedly left unanswered
Summary: nic270678 shared their disappointment with eBay's customer service regarding a 10-euro eBay Plus voucher that wasn't reissued after a returned purchase. They expressed frustration over repeated standard responses and the lack of escalation to a higher department, despite multiple requests. Several participants suggested that cancellation of eBay Plus is the user's responsibility and noted that eBay's policies clearly state vouchers are non-refundable, contrasting with experiences on other platforms like Amazon. nic270678 emphasized the need for more individual attention from customer service, rather than rigid adherence to scripts.
I’d like to share my current experience with eBay customer service here, because I now honestly find the way my issue has been handled really disappointing.
It all started with a simple goodwill request regarding an eBay Plus voucher worth €10. The voucher was used for a purchase, the item was then returned, and the voucher was not credited back.
I am well aware that, according to the terms, vouchers may not have to be refunded. That is exactly why I had explicitly asked for a goodwill review.
After the first agent declined this, I explicitly asked for my issue to be forwarded to a higher responsible department or a complaints department.
That was not addressed at all.
I then explicitly pointed out again that my actual question had not been answered and asked once more for it to be forwarded.
The next reply again only addressed the fact that no voucher could be issued. My specific request for escalation or forwarding was again not answered.
That is exactly what I find problematic.
At this point it is less about the €10 and more about the way the communication is handled. From my point of view, specific questions are being deliberately sidestepped, explicit requests are not being addressed, and instead you keep getting essentially the same standard reply over and over again.
If an employee themselves has no way to make a goodwill decision, that is completely fine with me. But then I would at least expect that an explicitly requested forwarding to the responsible department is reviewed or that it is explained in a way that makes sense why this supposedly isn’t possible.
Has anyone had similar experiences?
Is there even still a way at eBay to have an issue actually forwarded to a complaints department or a higher support level?

I don't see the problem here
Vouchers are not refunded according to the terms - I know that beforehand, and accordingly it would never occur to me to ask customer service whether they might nevertheless make an exception as a goodwill gesture
but if, in a moment of mental confusion, I did contact support and my request was rejected, I certainly wouldn't ask again or beg for it to be forwarded to a higher level so that I might vlt. still get the voucher refunded, which, as I knew beforehand, is actually not refunded
... and it is completely irrelevant how platform x or y or z handles it

OP4 days ago> Update:
In the meantime, I’ve received another reply from eBay customer service.
And once again, my actual message was apparently not answered individually.
The reply is practically word for word the same as the previous one and once again refers only to the 10-euro voucher.
My explicit request to be forwarded to a higher level or complaints department was again not answered.
Likewise, my request to cancel eBay Plus if no goodwill solution is possible was ignored.
I’m really starting to wonder whether these replies are even being read individually by a human anymore, or whether they’re just using fixed text snippets or automated responses here.
I כמובן can’t judge whether there’s a bot, AI, or simply an extremely rigid support script behind it. But when specific questions are asked multiple times and still keep being answered with almost the same standard text, that’s pretty disappointing from a customer point of view.
For me, it’s no longer about the 10 euros; it’s about the fact that specific concerns are obviously not being answered.

So please: You have to cancel it yourself and that was already written to you, making the continuation of the ebay Plus membership dependent on a goodwill voucher - which you are not entitled to at all -
is a condition you are simply setting and if things do not go according to your wishes, you threaten cancellation as a consequence.
That no customer service reacts positively to that is probably 👍🏻 clear, for me personally kind of childish behavior, if the teacher doesn't comply, you want to speak to the headmistress and complain

Mentor4 days agoI have not had such an experience as a buyer.
I rarely get vouchers, @nic270678 .
And if I do get vouchers, I don't use them, because I don't need anything right now and don't have to buy anything.
And if I do end up buying something and I cancel the purchase, the voucher is "burned".

OP4 days agoThat’s exactly where I see the difference between good and bad customer service.
In cases like this, Amazon, in my experience, handles vouchers and goodwill much more customer-oriented. Even if there’s no entitlement under the terms, they at least try to find a solution.
At eBay, it’s no longer mainly about the €10 voucher for me either. What bothers me is that specific questions and requests are simply ignored several times, and instead the same standard text keeps coming back.
Goodwill means precisely looking beyond the strict rules. And that’s exactly what, for me, makes the difference between good and bad customer service.

Mentor4 days agoHello @nic270678 a complaints office over a 10 euro voucher?
No, that doesn’t exist.
And to be honest.... even now, despite everything, I still don’t know which "specific question" of yours wasn’t answered.
You asked for a goodwill credit, that was refused to you several times, what other question did you ask?
Every voucher condition explicitly states that a voucher will not be refunded in the event of a return or if the seller cannot deliver, it is simply used up.

OP4 days agoThanks for your reply, but that’s not really what I’m talking about anymore.
I understood that eBay doesn’t have to reissue the voucher under the terms and conditions, and I never claimed otherwise.
My specific concerns, which still haven’t been answered, were rather:
being forwarded to a higher responsible department or complaints office, and
in the event that no goodwill solution is possible, cancelling my eBay Plus membership at the earliest possible date.
Neither of those was addressed.
Instead, I once again only received the answer that no voucher could be issued.
It’s exactly this failure to answer specific questions and requests that I’m criticizing.
If there really is no clearly reachable complaints or escalation point at eBay, requests for forwarding are ignored, and even the request to cancel eBay Plus isn’t addressed, I find that pretty remarkable for a platform of this size.
For me personally, eBay Plus is now hardly worth much added value anymore. Especially compared with other major platforms, such as Amazon, I find eBay’s customer service noticeably worse and, in my specific case, unfortunately extremely disappointing.

Mentor4 days ago · EditedYou can find contact details in the imprint, @nic270678 .
You can cancel your "Plus" membership yourself, if you want.
nic270678
OP4 days agoThanks, of course I can cancel it myself — but that wasn’t what I meant.
I had explicitly written to customer service that eBay Plus should be ended if no goodwill solution is possible, and at the same time asked for a prorated refund. That wasn’t addressed at all either.
You’d basically have to know in advance how little individually customer service apparently handles such requests.
Deliberately placing lots of orders and returning them would theoretically be one way to get eBay to cancel it, but of course I won’t do that.
In the end, I’d just be putting the sellers under strain and might even be violating eBay rules myself.
What I want is for eBay to finally answer my specific questions and offer a normal, straightforward solution.
Why can you reply and the people from eBay support can’t?

Mentor4 days ago · EditedHi @nic270678
customer service can’t fulfill your request to cancel your Ebay Plus membership at all.
That’s your own responsibility. If you no longer want to use the program, then cancel it yourself at the earliest possible date.
And Ebay has never really gone along with “demands” like a goodwill solution or cancellation.
