Experiences with conflicts in eBay sales
Summary: meisel1 reports a problem with a privately sold SUP board on eBay that the buyer claimed was defective after three weeks. Despite the item being in perfect condition when shipped, eBay refunded the buyer, and customer service did not provide satisfactory help. petersmodellbahnstuebchen explains the rules of eBay buyer protection and mentions possible reasons for the delayed complaint, while perfect-sally points out that the seller cannot prove the damage. hasjana raises the possibility that the buyer used the item on vacation and then returned it.
Hello community,
I recently sold a SUP board privately without warranty. However, after almost three weeks, the buyer claimed that the product was delivered defective and demanded a cancellation. Although the board was in perfect condition when it was shipped, eBay customer service did not help me, and I did not receive any response to my appeal. In the end, the buyer was refunded.
Now I’m wondering how other members deal with situations like this. Have you had similar experiences? How did you respond to such claims? And what ways have you found to protect your sales or reach customer service more effectively?
I’m looking forward to a lively exchange and your tips!

if the buyer reports within the 30-day buyer protection period that the item received is defective, eBay Buyer Protection applies.
After that, you have to provide the buyer with a return label and, once you have received the board back, reimburse the buyer the purchase price + shipping costs.

OP1 month agoHi,
many thanks for the quick reply.
Even though the board was in good condition when shipped and thus was probably only damaged by the buyer (or during transport)?
The fact that they only got in touch after almost three weeks also points to that.
Kind regards

Mentor1 month agoYou can't prove whether the item was damaged during transport or by the buyer.
And there are also definitely buyers who don't inspect or install the purchased items immediately.

Hi Joachim,
it's possible the buyer didn't have the time or chance to check the item promptly after receiving it.
I've also had cases in the past where I was away for work for 2 weeks or on vacation for 4 weeks, and I had the shipments sent directly to another delivery address I trust.
I could only check the contents of the package once I got back.
Best regards from the Baltic Sea

Mentor1 month agoI’m leaning toward "was on vacation" and the thing with the SUP ... it wouldn’t be the first time that items are returned after use

Mentor1 month agoHi @hasjana
might be, but doesn’t have to be. When I spotted interesting offers while on vacation or during longer project work, I naturally bid, bought, or paid.
The delivery address was then simply a kiosk, whose owner I was on very good terms with. That way I avoided the goods being returned to DHL after the storage period.
Best wishes from the Baltic Sea
