Experiences with returns due to non-delivery and receiving shipping costs charged again
Summary: mitherzaktiv sought advice on handling a returned item that could not be delivered to the buyer, who is willing to pay additional shipping costs for a second attempt. bootyooty advised that sharing bank details via eBay is allowed for this purpose since eBay's system does not support repeat shipping payments. meinehexe11 added a caution about using only eBay-registered addresses to maintain seller protection. mitherzaktiv clarified that the address was correct, but the parcel failed delivery four times via Hermes. A discussion followed about common delivery issues, with voli-maus and bootyooty sharing experiences of undelivered packages and emphasizing the importance of tracking shipments.
Hello everyone,
I hope you can help me with a question that probably many of us have thought about at some point. I recently sold an item that was sent back to me because it couldn't be delivered to the buyer. Now the buyer wants the item resent, which would, however, incur additional shipping costs. The buyer would be willing to pay these again, but how does the money transfer work?
I look forward to your tips and stories!
Best regards,
An eBay member

Mentor3 weeks agoHello @mitherzaktiv
"You are typically acting as a business or commercially if you:
buy items in order to resell them
sell items that you have made for resale
regularly sell large quantities of items
sell similar goods over a longer period of time, especially new goods
frequently sell new items that you did not acquire for your own use
According to case law, the following are indicators of commercial activity:
running an eBay shop
Number of current sales: If many items are constantly sold over a longer period of time, this is generally considered a commercial seller
Extended sale of a private collection over many years
Type of items sold (new or used goods, value): The sale of several similar navigation devices was classified as proof of commercial activity – likewise the offering of 250 batteries in various sizes with reference to the availability of larger quantities.
a website or the use of advertising descriptions that give a professional impression
Note: We regularly review the trading activities of our sellers and may ask them to mark their eBay account as a business account. You should also expect to be warned at your expense by competitors or consumer protection associations and to face legal action for injunctive relief."

Mentor3 weeks agoHello @mitherzaktiv exceptionally, data exchange is then allowed via the eBay system - here, bank details - you may share these with the buyer so that he can transfer the costs.
It is not possible to pay shipping costs again through eBay.
What was the reason anyway, had he given an outdated address?

Mentor3 weeks agoI'll add this: If the buyer tells you a different delivery address than the one stored on eBay, you should cancel the sale. It should only be shipped to the delivery address stored on eBay; otherwise, you'll lose your seller protection.

OP3 weeks agoMany thanks for the info, no, the address was correct. The delivery was via Hermes and apparently could not be delivered 4 times.

Mentor3 weeks agoGladly @mitherzaktiv but I don't understand that... the buyer can see in the tracking when a delivery is supposed to happen.
Why doesn't he then make sure that either he's there, or have it left at a Hermes shop or specify a preferred neighbor or drop-off spot?
All of that is possible these days, after all.

Mentor3 weeks agoHello bootyooty,
sometimes they don't even ring, they don't even come by.
They enter that you weren't home.
I had already experienced that with another large shipping company as well.
Then two days later you get a notice in the mailbox saying that you weren't reached.
Well, if the employee doesn't ring, they can't reach me. 😐

Mentor3 weeks agoHey Voli, I haven't been getting anything in the mailbox for years now, whether it's DHL or Hermes, everything is online and as a buyer I do at least take a look there, at the latest when I think I should be getting the goods by now.

Mentor3 weeks ago · EditedHi Booty,
Tracking is a pretty nice thing.
If it says something like: delivery from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.,
then you know what's up.
If the time window changes, say delivery until 4:15 p.m. or so, that's not a big deal.
I can wait a little longer too, I'm home anyway.
If no delivery vehicle even drove along the street during that time window and 10 minutes later the tracking says I wasn't home, that's pretty surprising and more than annoying.
I just wanted to mention how things can go. 😉
