Experiences with invalid VAT number in EU transactions
Summary: basskontor reports a problem with the validity of their VAT number for EU transactions, which is shown as invalid even though it is correctly registered. perfect-sally explains possible causes, including faulty data transmission between eBay and the Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt) or the wrong signal from the tax office. basskontor has already asked the BZSt and later received confirmation that the VAT number is valid again. The discussion also continues about the small business regulation and the need to register for OSS.
Hello everyone,
I recently noticed that my VAT number for cross-border transactions within the EU is being shown as invalid, even though I registered it correctly. This has led to some delays and issues in my eBay transactions.
I’m now wondering whether other members here have had similar experiences and how they dealt with it. What steps did you take to resolve the problem? Are there any tips on how to avoid such situations in the future?
I look forward to your input and hope that together we can develop some helpful strategies.
Thanks and best regards!

Mentor3 months agoQuestion back: what have you done to clarify this? Often the data from eBay and the BZSt just don’t match 100%.
It can also be that the tax office sends a wrong signal (U or US signal) to the BZSt, and thus the USt.ID appears as invalid. Then this would need to be clarified with the tax office and the BZSt, and then activated by the BZSt.

OP2 months agoI received the notification from the BZSt that the VAT signal was set and the VAT no. is valid again.
I have another question: I am now being treated under the small business regulation according to § 19 VAT Act. Should I check the box for OSS there?
Kind regards

Mentor2 months agoWhether you should tick the box for OSS or not, you should know whether you’ll be selling abroad for more than €10,000 or want to. Selling abroad or to the EU will be made harder anyway from August 12 because of all the packaging nonsense and the whole registering and paying in every EU country thing. A small seller can’t afford that anyway, and appointing a representative in every country won’t work like that either.
