Counterfeit from China - seller demands return shipment at my expense & processing via PayPal
Summary: The discussion focuses on an issue where schmiedl1860 addresses the problem of receiving a counterfeit item from China and the seller's demand for them to return it at their own expense, suggesting a resolution through PayPal. voli-maus, verena@ebay, and mia@ebay participate in the conversation, contributing to the discussion on how to handle such situations effectively.
I bought RAM (32GB) for €163.55 from a seller in China; it’s probably a counterfeit (system crash, wrong timings, Memtest fail, etc.).
The seller initiated a return but refuses to provide a prepaid return label. Instead, he’s asking me to send the item back to China at my own expense and is promising to reimburse the shipping costs via PayPal outside of eBay. He also apparently wants me to leave my PayPal ID for the item price.
My concerns:
Returning it at my own cost to China is risky (high risk of loss, expensive proof).
The request to handle payments (including shipping costs) outside of eBay is a clear violation of the rules.
Since the seller opened the return, I can no longer open a case with eBay right now. I’m stuck in his return process.
My question to the community: How do I get out of this trap and get my money back without getting involved in these risky off-platform methods? Since there’s no direct eBay support anymore – what escalation options do I actually have now? Unfortunately, the chatbot is no help at all here. Should I just let the return period expire and then escalate the case?
I want to proceed in full compliance in any case.

Mentor5 months agoHello @schmiedl1860,
Thank you very much for your post and your feedback.
It is indeed the case that a seller from China cannot issue a shipping label that you can drop off here with the shipping company. I saw that you have already written to the seller about how much the return shipping will cost. The seller should please send you the shipping costs in advance. As my colleague already wrote, this is possible outside of eBay.
I also contacted your seller and reminded them of their obligations as a seller. If this is not clarified by Monday, you can contact us again.
@oskar_der_wikinger - Thanks for the tag.
Kind regards
Mia

Mentor5 months agoHallo @schmiedl1860,
