I bought something in the US but didn't get what I won at auction

Hello,
I bid on an expensive model kit in the USA. The box was shipped via Ebay Shipping including customs clearance.
So far everything went well.
Then the seller got in touch and admitted that he packed and shipped something completely wrong (more like junk and scrap).
Now I’m sitting here and have to cover about 40 euros in shipping costs to send the whole thing back, without any certainty that the purchase price, shipping, and customs clearance
will be refunded.
Is there a way to involve Ebay directly?
