Again and again: suddenly the delivery was damaged...
Summary: oli_1797 sold a functioning TV with a built-in DVD player and shipped it to Spain. The buyer later claimed it was defective when using a CD, threatening legal action. oli_1797 believes the damage was due to incorrect use and has opened a case, but eBay requests them to cover return shipping costs. bootyooty advises that it's necessary to prepay return costs to retrieve the item, or eBay may automatically refund the buyer. perfect-sally questions why CDs wouldn't work, citing the manual's compatibility with CDs and DVDs, which contradicts oli_1797's statement.
Good morning everyone,
I sold a used but fully functional TV with a built-in DVD drive and, after receiving the purchase price - at the buyer's request to Spain - shipped it.
On 01/09/26, according to eBay, the TV was delivered to the buyer; on 14/09/26, he complained that the TV would not work when inserting a CD (!). I told the buyer that the TV can't work with a CD and that it has probably now been damaged due to incorrect use. The buyer immediately threatened to “get a lawyer”.
I opened a case and reported the buyer. I don't get the impression that anyone at eBay has read the details - now I'm supposed to cover the return shipping costs from Spain, since allegedly defective goods were shipped by me.
In your opinion, what should/can I do?
Many thanks in advance for your support.
Best regards, Oliver

that the TV would not work when a CD (!) was inserted. I told the buyer that the TV cannot work with a CD
Why should that be the case?
According to the operating instructions, the device can play the following media:
Plays DVD, DVD±R/RW, CD, CD-R/RW
USB 2.0 for media playback
You will have no choice but to accept a return, and you will also have to pay for the return shipping if you don't want to do without the device.

Mentor2 weeks agoHi @oli_1797 you opened a case, why?
Misuse of buyer protection?
Shipping abroad is always riskier; in principle, you have to advance the return shipping costs so you get your item back, otherwise eBay refunds the buyer and you can watch how you get the TV back.
So, cover the return shipping costs for the buyer, wait until the item is back and then refund.
If you don’t refund on your own, eBay does it and on top of that you get a defect entry in Seller Cockpit.
