Buyer wants to return an item that was shipped in perfect condition and as advertised in the listing.
Summary: softcat reported on a problematic transaction on eBay in which a buyer wants to return a damaged figure that was originally shipped in perfect condition. Beforehand, the buyer had shown interest in only one of the two figures auctioned and made multiple offers for it, which were rejected. After receiving the item, he claims that one figure is damaged and requested a return. softcat suspects that the buyer intentionally caused the damage in order to return the figure he did not want. petersmodellbahnstuebchen advised providing a return label and insisting on the return of both figures. The seller is concerned that honesty could be punished and unfair tactics supported.
Good day, dear Ebay community. I’m really hoping for your help!
I auctioned off 2 figures. During the auction, an “interested party” messaged me saying they were interested in only one figure. And made me offers for just that one figure. I replied that I would only sell both figures together. After multiple messages back and forth and my rejecting his offers, he then won both figures at auction. After the delivery arrived, the buyer messaged me saying that one figure had been delivered broken. I offered him my help to clarify this with DHL if needed. Somehow the buyer kept wanting me to do it all alone and for him to not have to do anything. But at some point it dawned on me that this was the buyer who had only wanted the one figure from the start and had also made me offers for it. Of course, the damaged figure is the one he supposedly didn’t even want. Now he naturally wants to return the damaged figure and I’m supposed to be left holding the bag. For the other figure, he actually made me offers again. Of course, because that was the one he had wanted from the beginning. What can I do so that Ebay will side with me as the seller for once and see what’s going on here? I shipped everything correctly, and now I’m supposed to be left with the damage, even though it’s completely clear what the buyer was trying to achieve? By the way, the buyer himself is a professional seller on Ebay and also made it very clear to me in our messages that I would get the short end of the stick (roughly speaking) in the event of a dispute. He has now requested a return on Ebay. I have first rejected that. But Ebay’s decision is still pending. What can I do to avert the worst and thus the damage from me? The entire message exchange would confirm what I’m writing here. But will Ebay actually read it too?
Please help me! I’m a private seller, by the way.

Hi Frank,
if the buyer has opened a case because of a damaged item, you have to provide a return label within the specified deadline.
Let him know that you expect both figures to be returned.
Best wishes from the Baltic Sea

OP1 month agoDear Peter,
But why should I now be left holding the damage that the buyer presumably caused deliberately in order to get his way in the end anyway? So then I’m being punished as the seller? Is that eBay’s approach, to punish honest sellers and support such criminal schemes? That can’t be true, can it?
And warm regards back to the Baltic Sea. 😉
