Buyer wants a refund for an allegedly defective item.
Summary: birkan-1 discusses a situation where a buyer is requesting a refund for an allegedly defective item.
Hello,
A few days ago, as a private seller, I sold a graphics card as new to another country. This morning I woke up to a message saying that I should refund it.
However, I refuse to do that.
I have no evidence at all that I am the guilty party and that:
a) it is not fraud, or
b) he didn't even damage the card himself.
The eBay support told me that I should simply ignore the refund until the deadline and then I can reject it. But in the message from this morning it says, "If you cannot resolve this request by 5 Jun, you may need to issue a refund without the item being returned to you"
Now I don't know who to believe either.
What can I do? And why do I even have to accept a return as a private seller?
I have proof that the card was sealed when it was shipped.
Above all, I can already see that if I accept it, I will either get some wrong item or something that the buyer damaged himself.
And even if not, I take a loss in value because the item was opened
Best regards
Birkan

Mentor2 months agoIf the buyer has opened a return with the reason that the item is not as described or is defective, then you cannot refuse, you have to pay for return shipping and refund them! If you don't do that, eBay will take care of it for you and you'll get a defect on your account.
And it's not a normal return but a complaint, and in that case all sellers have to take it back, whether private or not.
Even if you don't see it that way, you have to act or your money and your goods are gone.
Even if the package was sealed, the item inside could very well be defective!
I keep wondering why people here don't listen to us and keep shipping abroad despite the warnings. Now that's what you get.

OP2 months agoHey, thanks for the reply.
First: I just assumed that a platform like eBay would at least have some protection for its sellers, and I also hadn’t really seen anything before that made it seem “bad” to ship abroad.
Also, why is the phone support telling me something totally different then? That’s already kind of fraudulent from eBay support to tell me I should “wait because afterwards you can reject it,” when if I really do that then my money is just gone...
It’s not even about me not taking them back at all. But I just want to see proof from the buyer’s side!
Otherwise I could also buy things on eBay in the future however I feel like it and just lie and say they’re defective...
