Buyer protection for an item not received doesn't work
Summary: hubil reported problems with a purchase on eBay in which a perfume from the US did not arrive because of shipping issues. The seller delayed the refund because the package was classified as dangerous and was not returned. hubil was unable to open a buyer protection case on eBay because the return period had expired, and was advised to open a case with the payment provider. perfect-sally and meinehexe11 gave helpful tips on using buyer protection through PayPal or Klarna if the deadline has not yet passed.
Since eBay doesn't want to help - maybe the crowd will help me:
Around 1.5 months ago I bought an item (perfume) in the USA - according to the tracking it stopped moving somewhere over there (apparently classified as a dangerous liquid and if nobody responds, the goods would be destroyed?) - the seller isn't insisting on that there, wants to refund only once the shipment has reached him again.
eBay: Under “Purchases” and “more actions” no case (for item not received) can be opened,
the only way to get in touch was “return this item” - I stated several times that the item never reached me.
Meanwhile the return has of course been closed and I'm getting no answers to follow-up questions about a refund via buyer protection!
What's going on there?
Thanks for your time.

Mentor2 weeks agoHi there
Since buyer protection at eBay had expired, you couldn’t open a case for an item not received.
When paying with Klarna, you have 120 days and with PayPal 180 days of buyer protection. Try it there.

Mentor2 weeks ago · EditedIf you wrote after 1.5 months.... buyer protection should have expired long ago.
And why you open a return when you supposedly received nothing is beyond me. What exactly did you want to return if nothing arrived? Unfortunately, you handled it wrong.
Try to see if it’s possible to open a dispute with the payment provider; that’s still the only option.

OP2 weeks agoThanks - yes, the return must have been a mistake. I somehow wanted to cancel the purchase, and that was the only option offered.
But that the item never reached me is clear from the tracking, and in that case a return request should automatically be rejected or invalid anyway, even by the seller! Before that I started countless inquiries that were not followed up on.
So I’ll try it with PayPal -
Many thanks.
