Customer is complaining after more than 3 weeks, very strange.
Summary: schottl_de is selling a like-new Marantz network player and is worried because the buyer is demanding a return after more than three weeks over an alleged defect. perfect-sally explains that buyer protection allows a return and that the seller may have to pay for the return shipping. schottl_de has concerns about the condition of the returned device. petersmodellbahnstuebchen clarifies that the legal warranty applies, not a guarantee, and points to eBay as the contact for problems. schottl_de is frustrated about being responsible for any damage during the return shipping.
Hello, on 23/8 I sold an almost mint Marantz network player ND8006 via auction. Now, after more than 3 weeks, the buyer wants to return the player because supposedly the CD drive hasn't worked since he had the player. That seems very unlikely and flimsy to me; after all, he used the device for over 3 weeks without making any complaint. The device was in immaculate, yes almost mint condition, and I'm worried that if I agree to the return I will now get back a device with signs of use. Even when shipping, the buyer absolutely wanted extra insured shipping via DHL at my expense, which I refused. How should I react? Thanks for your help.
Regards Dieter

Mentor3 weeks agoAnd even if the thing had worked for the last 3 weeks, buyer protection still exists and the buyer can return it! You are responsible for the return shipping and must also pay for it.
If you first have to agree to the return, then the buyer apparently hasn’t opened a case or an official return yet. If that still comes, you’ll be forced to accept the return, and the return shipping also has to be paid.

OP3 weeks agoThanks for the info, does that mean that as the seller I’m giving a guarantee? What if the player comes back in a condition that’s worse than the one it was sent in? That’s absolutely unfair to sellers. How can I know what the buyer did with the device over those 3 weeks?

Mentor3 weeks agoNo, you don’t give any warranty, but the buyer has a right to a functioning item. And if something doesn’t work within the buyer protection, you just file a complaint. On eBay, buyer protection is only 30 days.
But the buyer could also file a complaint through their payment provider, and there are completely different deadlines for that within which a complaint can be made.

OP3 weeks agoOk, and what if I get the device back in worse condition?

Mentor3 weeks agoHi @schottl_de
As a seller, you don’t give a guarantee, but warranty.
And on eBay, buyer protection is just a big deal. If the item comes back different from how it was sent, you’ll have to deal with eBay.
Best regards from the Baltic Sea

OP3 weeks agoSo that means the customer can send me back a damaged device and I’m the one left dealing with the hassle? I don’t understand the world anymore. Who is liable for the return shipping? I’ve taken something back a few times before, but always right after the buyer received the item and complained about something. But after more than 3 weeks, for a used purchase and from a private seller?

If the customer sends back the wrong device, you have to deal with eBay.
