Deletion of a historic porcelain figurine (Neundorf) due to "offensive content" – justified?
Summary: lidor3073 shared their frustration about the removal of a historical porcelain figure from eBay due to it being labeled as offensive. The figure, described as a decorative Art Deco collectible with colonial-style advertising elements, was reportedly in violation of eBay's policies on offensive items. voli-maus suggested avoiding certain terms in the description, while petersmodellbahnstuebchen and other participants discussed similar experiences with eBay's policies, pointing out that certain historical depictions are more scrutinized than others, often influenced by cultural perspectives. The discussion also touched on the appeal process and the role of automated moderation in such cases.
Hello everyone,
I’m reaching out to the community because my listing was deleted by eBay today. It was a 29 cm tall, historic porcelain figurine from the well-known brand "Neundorf" (with base mark/eagle monogram). I described it as “boy with cake tray, turban, Sarotti style.” The reason given to me was that the item violates the policy on “obscene and offensive items.” From my perspective as a seller and collector, this is simply a decorative promotional figure and an antique of historical significance (Art Deco style) that is in no way intended to promote hatred or discrimination. It is purely a collector’s item that I was given as a gift, but it doesn’t suit me, made of porcelain with fine gilt detailing. I’d be interested in the opinions of other sellers and eBay staff: Is the visual style alone (historical advertising depictions from the colonial era) now enough for the algorithm to block such antiques across the board? Has anyone recently had similar experiences with branded porcelain or old advertising items?

Mentor1 month agoHello @lidor3073 ,
leave out the word Sarotti.

OP1 month agoIs that enough already? That's a long-established chocolate brand in Germany. 😕😏

And just type in "Mohrenfigur" - mine didn’t have that and you can find it everywhere.

Mentor1 month agoIt doesn't matter what others say.
It's about your account.
And if the article isn't from the chocolate brand, the term doesn't belong in the AB.

I’ll put it to the test tomorrow evening. If it gets deleted again, I’ll get back to you.

Products with advertising for the Sarotti brand, Stollwerck company, have already been removed from Ebay for years when the old advertising figure and not the "Sarotti magician" is shown.
That happened to me too with around 50-year-old Märklin Z gauge wagons.
