Report justified?
Summary: radar-23 reported about a buyer on eBay who bought an item on 30/08 but did not pay for it. Despite several reminders, the buyer insisted on bank details and cited problems with the switch to fiber optics as the reason. The other participants advised reporting the buyer or canceling the purchase and relisting the item. After a new payment deadline and follow-up contact from radar-23, the item was finally paid for, which resolved the issue. Additional tips were given on automatically handling non-payments.
Hi, I have a buyer who purchased on 20/8 but didn't pay. Later reminders, then a message via eBay saying he had to switch to fiber optic and a new provider, I should give bank details, he would pay right away. (05.09.) I insisted on payment via eBay and still haven't received any further message to this day. What happens if I "report" him?
Thanks in advance!

Mentor3 weeks agoHey @radar-23 nice, that's good 😀
Take a look here
https://www.ebay.de/Cancel/Preference/UnpaidPurchase
there you can choose from a few options regarding payment duration and purchase cancellations in case of non-payment.

OPSep 14, 2026 at 10:01 PMThe problem has been resolved, the buyer paid via eBay today (after I contacted them again). Many thanks for the help!

Do you have the automatic purchase cancellation after 4 days enabled, or did you change the period or deactivate it completely to manually cancel the sales in case of non-payment?

OPSep 14, 2026 at 9:49 PMSince I only started selling from 2 household clearances because of lack of space, I have no idea where the best place is to list it and how. I'll do some reading up on it over the weekend and maybe I can answer the question then too :/
Cautiously, I would say there isn't an automation set up, otherwise I would definitely have received a notification after 4 days that I can relist the item. Thanks for the answer!

MentorSep 14, 2026 at 2:49 PMTag @radar-23 I do think you should report the buyer.
If you don't, he may try it with other sellers to get hold of bank details.

OPSep 14, 2026 at 9:53 PMThanks! I sent another message earlier, in which I gave a deadline, after which I would repost the article. Less than an hour later, the article was paid for. So it turned out to be unnecessary.

MentorSep 14, 2026 at 12:00 PMHey, hey.
You’ve done everything right so far. Sharing bank details is a violation of policy. Payments are made exclusively through eBay.
Report an unpaid item to eBay.

OPSep 14, 2026 at 11:48 AMCorrection: Purchase was on 30/08, sorry

MentorSep 14, 2026 at 12:16 PMThat's all just an excuse, don't get involved in anything.
For example, I also recently switched to fiber optics and had no interruption to the internet at all.
The rest has already been written to you, everything correct on your end. Cancel the purchase with the reason that it wasn't paid for and relist the item. The non-payer gets a note on their account and you should add them to your block list. You can save yourself an additional report to eBay, nothing will happen.

MentorSep 14, 2026 at 3:06 PMwell, a transition can go smoothly without any problems, but it can also happen that something doesn't work
in our 2 transitions that we've been through so far, there were no problems, but we planned for that kind of thing and didn't buy/sell anything during the period, and informed the previous buyers that it can happen that from day x onward nobody is reachable at first, or that emails just won't go through, if there are still any open questions
today, in general, you’re naturally more reachable through your cellphone - ideally a smartphone - and can also check your emails, pay bills, etc.

OPSep 14, 2026 at 9:59 PMThanks. I set him a deadline for payment today and he paid. So the issue is moot. What made me suspicious was that, despite problems with the switch, he can send a message via eBay but not pay. Since everything obviously worked out today, a report is rather unnecessary :)
