Do I have to pay these "import duties" now?
Summary: shiunee purchased an item from South Korea via eBay and paid $11.40 in VAT through the IOSS system. However, the seller requested an additional $15 for import duties, claiming it was necessary due to initial shipping costs. shiunee questioned the validity of this charge, given that the VAT was already paid and only a $3 customs duty was expected. perfect-sally clarified the difference between VAT and customs fees, and asked an eBay representative to look into the issue. elke@ebay, representing eBay, confirmed that all fees were settled with eBay and advised shiunee not to pay the seller directly but to report any issues with receiving the item through eBay.
So, I recently bought something on Ebay from South Korea. When paying, I noticed that I had already paid $11.40 in VAT through Ebay via IOSS.
But now my seller comes along and says I should pay $15 import duty because he had to advance that during shipping. But from my point of view, the VAT
has already been paid and then only the new 3 euro mandatory customs duty would apply to me.
So the question is, do I have to pay these 15 dollars? Did the seller do something wrong (since I already paid the VAT)? How can I best contact Ebay
about this, because I'm already looking into that too.
Or maybe someone here knows better and could help me. Thanks a lot in advance for the answers!

Mentor1 month agoImport VAT and customs fees are 2 completely different things!
Ebay has a legal notice where you can find contact options.

OP1 month agoBut normally it's VAT + customs duty. And since my product is worth less than 150 euros, I've already paid the VAT of $11.40 via eBay/IOSS. So only the 3 euros customs duty should have been outstanding. That's why I don't understand why the seller had to pay $15 in “import duties”.

@elke@ebay would you be so kind? Thanks

·1 month agoHello @shiunee , thank you very much for your post. According to eBay checkout, you have already paid the purchase amount in full to eBay, including the shipping costs and import fees. Accordingly, I recommend that you do not make a separate payment directly to the seller. If he does not ship the item on time, you can report an item not received through eBay.
@perfect-sally thank you very much for the tag.
Kind regards

OP1 month agoOkay, thanks a lot for the reply. The thing is, the item has already been shipped and the buyer apparently paid in advance and now wants the 15 dollars from me. But since I already paid the import fees through Ebay, I was confused about that.
