After 22 years of loyal membership: massive PayPal problem at checkout (credit card requirement / error)
Summary: zap-ze-rap, a long-time eBay member, reports problems with PayPal payments on eBay. Despite a verified and sufficiently funded PayPal account, a credit card is being requested, which causes purchases to be abandoned. Previous attempts to solve the problem by contacting eBay and PayPal support, as well as by switching browsers, have been unsuccessful. zap-ze-rap is frustrated by the lack of support and is threatening to leave eBay. eBay points to PayPal security measures but does not offer any concrete solution, which zap-ze-rap finds inadequate.
Hello everyone,
I’ve been a loyal eBay member for 22 years, but right now I’m completely at my wit’s end. For days now, I haven’t been able to complete any purchase through PayPal.
My PayPal account is absolutely error-free, fully verified, and has a balance. Nevertheless, in eBay’s checkout process my balance is ignored and the system suddenly insists on a credit card, which I don’t have. Alternatively, the payment completely fails with the message “PayPal is currently unavailable”.
I’ve already called PayPal (everything is enabled there) and eBay support (a ticket was created for IT). Switching browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Edge) didn’t help. In my account settings under “Payments,” I also can’t pre-store PayPal anymore; it can only be selected directly in the cart.
Does anyone know this problem or have a solution for how to get around this security filter/interface error? I’ve already had to cancel purchases several times, which is also awkward for the sellers. If this isn’t resolved, after more than two decades I’ll unfortunately be forced to leave eBay for good.
Thank you very much for your help and tips!
Hubert

OP5 days agoHello everyone,
I’d like to reactivate my topic here once again, because unfortunately the problem still exists and I feel completely left alone. So far, neither eBay nor PayPal has offered any real help or solution.
I have now contacted PayPal support by phone three times. Each time I was assured that everything is in order with my account and that there are no restrictions.
But now comes the absurd part that I just no longer understand:
If I log out and order as a guest, I can pay for the same item without any problem using my PayPal account! However, as soon as I am logged into my permanent eBay account, checkout breaks off immediately with the familiar error and asks for a credit card.
That clearly proves that it is not a general problem with my PayPal account. Somewhere in the system, something must simply be broken here.
Is there really no way at all to help here or to have the whole thing thoroughly checked again?
As a long-time customer, I would be truly grateful for real support, because at the moment I feel completely left out in the cold by both sides.
Best regards
Hubert

Mentor3 weeks agoHello @zap-ze-rap ,
we have received feedback from the specialist department. This request to add another payment method is a security measure from PayPal and cannot be influenced by eBay. Of course, you also have the option of using another payment method instead.
Best regards

OP3 weeks ago · EditedHello Vera,
well, this is pretty much a bad joke and an absolute outrage after 22 years of loyal membership here at eBay! Now you're just dumping the blame completely on PayPal and that's the end of it for you or what?
I even called PayPal and they told me very clearly that my account is completely fine and that there are no blocks in place. There's plenty of credit on it! But your checkout even crashes when the amount is reduced to 0.00 euros by the voucher, and it still demands a credit card. How is PayPal supposed to block anything when nothing even needs to be charged??
And about your sentence that I should use a different payment method: Why should I do that?! I've been paying with PayPal with you for years and it always worked, why should I suddenly change that now and get used to something else just because your tech is acting up!?!?
You're making it damn easy for yourselves to wash your hands of it instead of actually looking for the error in your database properly. As a long-time customer, I feel completely screwed over here and left out in the rain.
If that's your answer then after more than two decades I'll probably delete my account here for good. You can really do without a service like that.

Mentor3 weeks ago@zap-ze-rap Hey. 🙂 At the moment, we’re not aware of any issues with payment via PayPal.
How long has this problem been going on roughly?
@perfect-sally Thanks a lot for the tag. ❤

Mentor3 weeks agoToday I haven't made any payments with PP yet, but yesterday evening and as always it worked without any problems.
But the message PP is currently not available already sounds odd.
Please at least name 1 item number of an item that couldn't be paid for with PP and we'll have an eBay employee take a look. Cache cleared, cookies deleted? Tried another browser?
@nina@ebay Are problems with PayPal payments known? Could you please take a look? Thanks

OP3 weeks ago · EditedHello Nina and perfect-sally,
many thanks for your quick feedback!
The problem has been happening for me since today. I have tried it several times (a total of 4 purchase cancellations). Among the items affected was item number: 386866160351 (car cigarette lighter adapter).
Cache and cookies were completely deleted in Firefox; I also tried Google Chrome without success.
I already spoke today with eBay support by phone. The support agent has also already created an IT ticket for my account.
My PayPal account has been verified for years and has sufficient balance. A call to PayPal today also confirmed to me that there are no blocks or problems on their side. Nevertheless, the eBay checkout crashes when clicking on PayPal or shows me the attached window.
As you can see in the attached screenshot, PayPal is completely blocking the available balance and requires adding a credit card - even though the final amount with the voucher is 0,00 €!
Since I have been a loyal member for 22 years, I very much hope that IT can quickly fix this interface error on my account. I am attaching the image of the error message for you.
Best regards,
Hubert

Mentor3 weeks agoHello @nina@ebay , could you please be so kind and take another look here.
Is it because of the voucher?

OP3 weeks agoHello Nina and everyone,
I just wanted to quickly ask whether there are any updates from the technicians yet?
Unfortunately, the problem still remains unchanged and is completely blocking me. Could I please get a little update on how things are going now? I’d also be interested in how long IT estimates it will take until the error is fixed, so roughly how much longer it will take.
As long as PayPal payments on my account don’t work flawlessly again, I can and unfortunately will not buy anything else here. After years of loyalty, I’d simply like to be able to pay for my purchases normally again.
I really hope for a quick reply or a solution.
Best regards,
Hubert
