Package was returned despite the correct delivery address, buyer hasn't responded anymore

I have the following issue, and the eBay chatbot can’t help me.
I sold something at the end of June, and the parcel went to the delivery address given by the buyer (looks like a Packstation or post box).
The parcel came back because the recipient could not be found at the delivery address.
I contacted the buyer; he confirmed the correct address, wanted to sort out what went wrong, and said he’d get back to me.
Since then, unfortunately, there’s been radio silence; even after I followed up, he no longer responds.
What can I do to close out the transaction?
I’d like to cancel the purchase, but I don’t know what happens with the refund then.
I’m happy to refund the purchase price without any problems, but I had to pay the postage, so I don’t want to have to pay that back.
Or can only the buyer start this process?
I’d appreciate any tips, because the eBay chatbot is annoying me.

Mentor2 weeks agoOnly sellers can cancel purchases. And if purchases are cancelled, then the full amount actually has to be refunded.
You can send a refund through the item without cancelling the purchase and deduct the shipping costs. But then it may be that the buyer can leave you a bad rating.
