Refund requested due to alleged defect

Summary: familieazak explains that he sold a new chair that originally cost €400, but sold it for €200 to a buyer in unopened original packaging. The buyer is now claiming that the backrest cannot be adjusted and is demanding a refund. familieazak is disappointed, as this means a significant financial loss, and asks for advice on how to proceed. meinehexe11 recommends taking the chair back to avoid further problems, while perfect-sally points out that buyers can sometimes intentionally report defects. familieazak asks whether support from eBay is possible to cover the shipping costs and the loss in value.

Hello, I sold a brand-new chair. The original price was 400€ but I sold the chair for 200€. The chair was brand new and still in its unopened original packaging! So the buyer got a great deal. Now he’s gotten in touch and says that supposedly the backrest can’t be adjusted! I can hardly believe it!! He requested a refund! What can I do? I’m very disappointed since opening and assembling the chair also caused it to lose value!!! Even if I take it back, at my own expense too!! Then I wouldn’t be able to sell it for that price anymore!! So a clear financial loss and damage! Does anyone have an idea how I should best proceed now? This is the first time I’ve experienced this.. Thanks

    Hi, hi.

I'm afraid you won't have any choice but to take the chair back. The buyer is making a complaint, and you should respond to the complaint accordingly if you want to avoid a defect entry in your account.

That’s really unfair, though. After all, I have such a big disadvantage!! Especially since I don’t know whether he assembled it correctly and whether that created a defect. I think that’s very unfair

It would be just as unfair if the buyer received an item that doesn’t work properly! And from your OP I gather that you didn’t check the item because it was in the original packaging.

Huh? Should I have assembled it and then taken it apart again??!!! Of course I sent the item exactly as I received it. I also offered it that way, „ in its original packaging - unopened“ since it is a very high-quality chair, I absolutely do not assume that it doesn’t work or that it has a defect. I think the person just doesn’t know how to adjust it, or maybe did something wrong themselves - if anything at all. I’ve also heard that some buyers do that deliberately to get a discount afterward. Is that true ?

Yes, unfortunately there are also buyers like that.

But if the buyer files a complaint and you don't respond or take it back, then eBay will step in and you may end up losing both the money and the goods, and there will be a defect on the account.

Can't I ask eBay for help? I also don't understand why I should bear the shipping costs? And how is the loss in value handled? And if I take it back and find that it had no defects, do I still have any options? Because I have to be honest, I can't imagine that and I can't accept that I now have at least a 100€ loss in value. Selling the chair as new was already hard, but used I definitely won't get anywhere near that amount for it! And it originally cost 400€ 😭

For now, buyer protection applies first, and you can’t involve eBay at this point.

The so-called loss in value is unfortunately at the seller’s expense.
