Returning counterfeit goods: ethical and legal considerations
Summary: bobalcove reports a problem with a fraudulent purchase of an item, where the seller insists on the item being returned, which raises concerns about possible complications, especially with a seller abroad. bobalcove is looking for experiences and advice on how to proceed safely and ethically in such situations.
Hello everyone,
I recently had the problem that I bought a counterfeit item and asked for a refund. Now the seller is insisting on getting the fake back, which is causing me doubt and concern. My seller is in Japan, and I’m worried that this could lead to complications.
How have you handled situations like this? How can you make sure that such counterfeits are not sold again? Do you have any tips or experiences on the best way to proceed in situations like this, especially when the seller is based abroad? I’m looking forward to your opinions and advice!

The goods have to be returned even if they’re counterfeit; otherwise there’s no refund.
In a few cases, customs will seize and destroy them, or they don’t need to be sent back. What reason did you give for the return?
Item does not match the description?
Whether the item is then sold again can’t be prevented, can it? All the more difficult if it was bought abroad—who’s going to pursue copyright action there?
