Seller cancels order after payment is received; eBay supports this practice.
Summary: naluto342 reports that a seller canceled the purchase after accepting a price offer and receiving payment via PayPal, with the reason "item no longer in stock or damaged," without any prior communication. naluto342 suspects that the item was either sold outside the platform or that its condition was described incorrectly. eBay does not respond to such reports, which naluto342 criticizes. perfect-sally points out that the effort for an item costing €2.30 is disproportionate and that the seller may have had valid reasons. According to perfect-sally, eBay generally isn’t interested in such cases.
I had an item with a price of €2.30 or best offer in my watchlist. The seller then sent me a price offer, which I accepted. I paid directly via PayPal, and then nothing happened for 31 hours.
Then I get a notification that the seller canceled the purchase. Reason: "Item no longer in stock or damaged"
The seller didn’t inform me on their own; when I asked, all I got was "It says so in the reason."
The item was described in the listing and in its condition as "new." So either they lied about the condition when creating the offer, or they sold the item outside the platform in the time between then and my purchase. I can’t see the exact listing date anymore, but I think it may have been listed a day or two earlier.
Reported item as "offer without item," eBay closes the report automatically and sees no violation of its policies. Appealed the decision, same result.
Reported the seller itself, decision pending. Though from "data protection reasons" there probably won’t be any update.
The consensus on the internet seems to be: common method for sellers to back out of purchase contracts. As a buyer, all you’re left with is civil law. Of course, for the amount in dispute that’s nonsense. So as a buyer, you’re out of luck.
Why does eBay support this kind of behavior without any real consequences? If I read that correctly, there’s only a warning on the platform side, after four of those the seller rating drops, and that’s it.

Mentor1 week agoI don’t understand why you’re making such a big deal over 2.30 €. Of course that’s not really correct, but what if the seller actually can’t find the item anymore or is actually busy? Is he supposed to wait until you open a case because of an item not received?
And to go on about the condition as well I already find very strange, because you’re accusing someone you don’t know of having described the item incorrectly and supposedly that it isn’t new. Honestly, the seller should be glad he didn’t sell to you if that’s the kind of accusations you come with and you’d still have who knows what else to complain about after receiving it!
And yes, eBay doesn’t care about that, you can report what and where you want. With the reason given, he gets his defect on his account and that’s that.
