Seller says 2 hours before the auction ends that the item supposedly went missing!
Hello, what can I do if a seller sends the following by message 2 hours before the auction ends (I was the highest bidder until the very end)?
"Hello, good morning from Mannheim, I had packed the little tins in a small box. Unfortunately, when I was disposing of all my boxes, I threw that box away with them. Yesterday I turned the whole apartment upside down, but I can't find it. Thank you for your understanding. Kind regards ... "

Mentor1 week agoWhat do you want to do then? Are you insisting on the item at all costs? Did the seller cancel the auction? Ebay doesn’t care about that; you can ask your lawyer if it’s even worth it over such trivial matters.

OP1 week ago · EditedNo, he didn't. And of course I can't force goods. However, it can't be that a seller can just get out of the whole thing with flimsy statements/claims when the auction doesn't go the way he wants it to. What purpose does an auction even still serve then?

Mentor1 week agoLike I said, eBay doesn't care. Either the seller cancels the auction or you pay right after winning the auction so you don't end up having problems over non-payment too. If the seller still can't deliver, they have to cancel the purchase and refund you.
And if they give the correct reason for canceling, namely that they can't deliver the goods, then they at least get a defect on their account. And then you could also rate them accordingly 😏

OP1 week agoThanks, but then it’s clear why he only sent me one message 2h before the end of the auction and didn’t cancel it. That way I also can’t rate him badly and he can keep playing his game like this. Right?

just do what @perfect-sally advised you to do:
Pay for the item
If it isn’t delivered, open a case with the reason item not received
