Why doesn't eBay help me in a case of fraud?
Summary: e*b*a*y*1 experienced a case of alleged eBay fraud where a buyer used a fake return label for a scam, leading to e*b*a*y*1's financial loss of 593 euros. Despite repeated attempts to resolve the situation, they felt unsupported by eBay and expressed frustration at the platform's handling of the issue. After some communication, e*b*a*y*1 later mentioned that a partial refund was received but it seemed to be calculated incorrectly in another currency. Eventually, eBay confirmed a full refund was processed for the missing amount, resolving the issue.

OP1 week agoHello
That sounds good, but almost 90 euros too little came through. Is the rest still coming?
e*b*a*y*1
OP1 week agoBut first of all, thanks for helping me with this.

OP1 week agoI think I was paid out pounds, not the total sum in euros. My loss was 593 euros. I have now received 505 euros, which is the sum in pounds, please check again. Thanks

Hello @e*b*a*y*1 - the outstanding amount of 90.94 € has now been fully refunded - thanks for pointing it out! 😊

OP1 week agoMany thanks for that. I was very relieved when my money was returned.
Thanks for that.
And please try to improve this buyer protection because this scam can really happen to anyone every day.

Hello
I would like to ask you to take care of this case because I am really desperate. I really sold genuine goods and received a return number from the buyer or eBay, with which a phone case from the company betterfon was sent to me. Apparently the buyer ordered this phone case in our name and put our delivery address on it, so that instead of the original item to be returned, a worthless one was delivered to us. Through this return no., eBay’s system granted the buyer’s protection for the buyer and the money for the paid item was deducted from my account again, and the genuine item was never sent back by the customer.
Please help me because I don't know how else I am supposed to get my money back. I have always done good business here on eBay, but this return trick has to be stopped.
Kind regards, INES

Hello @e*b*a*y*1 - as already communicated via PM, the case is still being reviewed internally at the moment and we’ll get back to you as soon as there’s any news.
Thanks and kind regards

OP1 week agoFirst of all, thanks for your efforts. I’m very pleased. Now I still have the question: why, if it is fully reimbursed, were only 505. 56 euros paid? Is that possibly a mistake because the 593 euros converted into British pounds corresponds to the sum of 505.56? So far I have received the 505 euros. In England, that’s 593 euros.
Best regards, Ines

Mentor3 weeks agoI'm surprised that the "article" hasn't already been deleted long ago because stuff like that is highly contrary to the principles!
Then on top of the alleged fraud comes the account suspension!
e*b*a*y*1
OP3 weeks agoWhat alleged fraud? It is obvious to everyone that I received a tracking number or eBay from the buyer that leads to an online seller with over 150 negative reviews, which clearly shows that he did not send back MY goods, but instead bought goods there in order to use the tracking number for this fraud. So please...if no one recognizes that, then I no longer believe in any justice in our system.

OP3 weeks agoEven at giga.de this scam is explained, since it must have happened often already.
PLEASE GET MY MONEY BACK this all can't be true here.
e*b*a*y*1
OP3 weeks agoAnd one more note.
I was informed in writing that the buyer would receive a return label via eBay and that then the weight and all data could be checked. So why did he use a DHL number from an online retailer to fake the return?

OP3 weeks agoI’m on vacation until Sunday and then I’ll try to explain to the police what happened. I’m annoyed that I didn’t keep this case, but it didn’t even fit my phone, so I never thought that this tracking number would become so important. Hopefully they can trace the online seller through the number. 593 euros is a lot of money and I’m angry that no one responded and they just kept going until the money was debited from my account.
e*b*a*y*1
OP3 weeks agoWhy isn’t the money just taken back and then wait for his reaction. I bet 1000 percent he won’t say anything about it or respond.

OP2 weeks agoSo dear eBayers. I am now going to file charges against a woman named Petrova and a woman named Asparuhova. Both names are linked on eBay in one account as eBay member, delivery address and member do not match at all. The return number comes from neither one nor the other lady. Betterfon from Bornheim is the sender of my supposed return. I will also report them for sending goods I never ordered. Furthermore, my lawyer will then check why eBay is not taking action, since it is obvious that eBay too was clearly defrauded by this false return number and thus sent my money to the fraudsters. So far, unfortunately, nothing has happened on eBay's side, which I absolutely do not understand. Hagen. 26.08.2026

Mentor3 weeks agoHello @e*b*a*y*1
I have forwarded your request to the specialist department. We will probably get back to you again at the beginning of next week.
Nevertheless, I would advise you to file a report with the police now.
Thanks for the tag @petersmodellbahnstuebchen @bootyooty

OP3 weeks agoI have now found out that the phone case that the fraudsters ordered in our name was ordered from the company bestcom solutions GmbH. So far, though, nobody is answering the phone there, since I would of course like to know who ordered the case there in order to use the tracking number for this fraudulent purpose.

OP3 weeks agoAnd there's one more thing I don't understand. My listed item is clearly visible and has the original verified packaging so everyone can see that it is packaged originally. Why is the case then closed prematurely without any checking whatsoever of whether it's genuine, whether it's fake, or whether it's actually being sent back at all, and the scammer gets the money too quickly? Nobody was able to check, but ebay interferes in this sale and simply decides without the seller being able to exercise any rights to uncover this fraud. I will never sell here again; I don't dare to because so much money is simply distributed and decided on by third parties here. After so many years as an ebayer, I'm disappointed 😞
e*b*a*y*1
OP3 weeks agoI really have to ask now why does the buyer have buyer protection here? I sold legally in Germany after all. But the item was then sent on to England!. Surely buyer protection no longer applies there. I think I need to get a lawyer involved because I think eBay has clearly and unlawfully passed on buyer protection in a way that is abusive to a country where I don't even sell at all. That can't be right that I should even have to contact eBay in England.
perfect-sally
Mentor3 weeks ago · EditedIn the country where the buyer is registered, the platform rules apply and in this case that would be ebay.uk. Why shouldn’t buyer protection exist there? On other ebay platforms, buyer protection is sometimes valued even more highly than it already is on ebay.de.
e*b*a*y*1
OP3 weeks agoIf eBay really looked into this buyer properly, they would have to realize that something isn’t right. He’s only been registered on eBay for a short time, you can’t see any of his ratings, and after opening the case he never got in touch again, even though I wrote to him several times asking him to please explain or provide proof of how he can tell it’s fake when he never even opened the blister. I reported to eBay right away that something was fishy, but never had a chance.
e*b*a*y*1
OP3 weeks agoI heard about a Miriam who might be able to help further here, because I want to be absolutely sure that someone here checks exactly what kind of scam this is. If this starts going around, anyone can do something like that and get their money back.
I sincerely hope that justice is done here🙏🙏

OP3 weeks agoOkay, thanks.
I’ve now tried to find out more about it. As a private seller, I sent goods with proof, and they also arrived with proof. Under German law, since I excluded returns, as a private seller I have no obligation to take anything back. The goods arrived undamaged at the delivery address in Germany. I did not send anything to England and would not have agreed to the sale or would have cancelled it. Now that the buyer described the goods as fake and didn’t even provide any proof to disclose this to me, and a return number that was NOT intended for the item was made available to me via a third party (eBay) only 5 days after delivery (provable), I was deprived of any chance to inspect the return myself. (Finding: phone case and not my gold bar).
I ask once again to check carefully how it could have come to this premature decision to refund the buyer’s money.
e*b*a*y*1
OP2 weeks agoWe'll probably get back to you at the beginning of next week? The week is over tomorrow.... no exam? No help? Just my money passed on unlawfully and the prospects? Those are good eBay prospects for me.
e*b*a*y*1
OP2 weeks agoGood morning. I have now waited 1 week and also wrote to a Miriam yesterday. Unfortunately, it has been radio silence here for a week. Too bad. I thought at least here someone could help me get my money back. My lawyer told me that I can only get the money back with certainty with eBay’s help, because the report will probably now be closed for minor significance and lack of public interest. I’m slowly starting to believe in nothing anymore. The status is: eBay reimbursed the fraudster the money and then took it back from me. I got the tracking number on the day the case was closed and only then knew that the goods I received a week earlier belonged to the return that never existed..
So the buyer deceived eBay’s system. And the end of the story is that I am now stuck with a huge loss of 593 euros.
Buyer protection ok, but SELLER PROTECTION is not taken into account here. This fraud trick can’t be happening for the first time. If so, then good night to the other poor sellers who still fall for this scam. Have a nice weekend.

Once again, please dear eBay team, get my money back....

Mentor2 weeks agoMornin’ @e*b*a*y*1
how do you want to prove that you really sent the photographed gold bar? Please don’t get me wrong, I even believe you.
I also think that forwarding the shipment abroad excludes buyer protection. It is entirely possible that a third party swapped out the item.
But who is supposed to be able to check that neutrally, please?
Neither Ebay nor any of us here in the forum can do that.
I also don’t want to judge what expertise your lawyer has. I would at least consider filing a report for internet fraud. Whether that will then be dismissed can only be shown by going through the legal process.
Kind regards from the Baltic Sea
Peter

Mentor3 weeks agoHi @e*b*a*y*1
if you know for sure that he ordered the phone case through an online retailer, you can also ask them why this package was sent to you. The online retailer should actually know on whose behalf it was shipped.
Best wishes from the Baltic Sea
Peter

Mentor3 weeks ago@samantha@ebay could you please take a look to see whether the buyer has been noticed acting up before?
