Fees are getting out of hand more and more
I am extremely annoyed because the seller fees keep escalating more and more
the base fee is still the same, but this rip-off system with the ads and special promotions is just getting on my nerves. Sure, it’s voluntary, but if you don’t run ads, etc., sales drop off massively.
The recommended ad rate keeps getting higher and higher, which is no surprise.
It can’t be right that there are months where you have over 20% in fees.
And then employees keep calling, wanting you to run even more ads, etc.
The executives seem to have completely lost touch with reality, eBay should go back to its roots again.

·2 months agoWe are now, including free shipping for buyers, listing fees, premium nonsense, and the usual commission, at over 30% in fees, and that will in future apply to all commercial sellers. It is exactly as @m-d-parts2017 writes; without ads and the typical slave deal that lets the customer do anything while the commercial seller no longer has any rights at all, no more sales are possible. So the ads have basically become "mandatory" and are nothing other than a hidden fee increase. Here is an example from today:
Coincidentally, that works out to 25.6% fees, or 345.93 euros!!!! If you now also take into account that the rare and fragile item was packed carton in carton (washer-sized), filled with Styrofoam (just under 600 liters at a cost of 30 euros) and shipped via DHL at a weight of 15 kg, you get very close to the mentioned 30% fees. Because if you passed the shipping cost on to the buyer, you would also sell worse, so again a forced fee increase. In addition, one has to consider which requirements one now has to fulfill and, above all, pay for regarding waste, electronic waste, and the stupidest EU laws; I think then you end up at even 35 - 40%. And if you then add taxes, it quickly becomes clear that you can no longer really survive with this model, thanks eBay!!!
Unfortunately, there is no comparable alternative to eBay - we’ve tried them all and nothing comes even close to the sales eBay brings in - unfortunately!! In return, life itself is also getting more and more expensive. Unfortunately, it is no longer possible to survive with eBay; 8 - 10 years ago it was completely different, but back then you were also not forced to run these **bleep** ads.

·4 months agoAnother equally big problem is that, once buyers have to bear the return shipping costs themselves, it is very often stated that the item differs from the description. In these cases, the seller must then cover the return shipping costs as well. On top of that, the service status deteriorates, which leads to higher or outrageously high seller fees. The quota set by Ebay is extremely low so that as many people as possible pay very high fees. Ebay's messages saying "improve your service status" are an absolute joke. The incentive for the buyer to give an incorrect return reason is obvious: they only want to avoid the return shipping costs. I increasingly don't feel like selling on Ebay anymore; the costs are պարզապես too high. It just isn't worth it anymore. Bottom line, it is ultimately also a disadvantage for Ebay if sellers flee in droves and look for other sales channels.

·4 months agoHello @portobe_49 , yes, that is a problem that has already been brought up here by several users.
Especially in your fashion category, there are certainly more returns than in other categories. And no buyer likes to pay extra. Most people know that an "item deviating from the description" can be returned at the seller's expense. You can find something wrong with every item. And then there is the nonsensical peer group comparison. No one knows who is being compared with whom. That leads to higher fees.
So you have to keep this rate low. Free return shipping might be something to reduce this rate a bit. You charge 5.99 EUR shipping. The cheapest DHL parcel over 2kg costs 7.69 EUR. Then your prices are such that you can comfortably add 3 to 5 EUR. That way everyone already pays for what they want: free return shipping.
Only those who can't get a handle on the eBay cost structure run away in droves.
Other sales channels also cost money, are not suitable for everyone and every item, and the small retailer always has more financial hardships than the market leader.

·6 months agoThe new fees are insane, in the absolutely negative sense.
How can you increase the fees like this in times that are already economically difficult for businesses, which are also burdened by, for example, a higher minimum wage?
And what surprises me even more, why are there not more sellers speaking up here?
corneb_0
·6 months agoI assume that the majority of them haven’t noticed yet at all. I think only a very few sellers really look at the Seller News, and eBay hasn’t announced anything by email so far at least. And even those who just skim over it:
"Trust and protection - Find out everything about the changes to the sales commission by category."
If you only briefly read the headline, how on earth are you supposed to realize that this has anything whatsoever to do with a fee increase?
My opinion: eBay is already automatically making money from higher prices anyway, and with actions like this the platform only loses even more merchants and is thus destroying itself in the long run.
rest-fest
·6 months agoHello @corneb_0 , you are a private seller with this account. This doesn’t concern you at all. That’s why you didn’t receive any information either.
The message was sent to all commercial sellers by email, is in the message system and in the seller cockpit. Anyone who didn’t notice it doesn’t have their business under control.
eBay isn’t destroying itself. A billion-dollar company doesn’t collapse that quickly. The platform has gained significantly in some areas since private sellers started selling for free. What’s shrinking is the forced commercial sector, small businesses up to medium-sized companies, which can’t keep up with private sellers, big sellers, and suppliers from the Far East.

·6 months agoI also don't find the increase all that exciting, but where does the commission double on a 2000 EUR item?
If I calculate with the 6.5% - which should be there:
Before, on 2000 EUR it was 58.00 EUR and now it's 77.50 EUR - so that's about 25% more and not 100%.

·6 months agoGood morning @edv-solutions,
I got the email on all commercial accounts with "...your Seller News for January is here" and it’s also in the message portal. Seller News and everything that comes from eBay should be read.
I agree with you that the fees for IT items are increasing.
But in other areas, the fees at this level have been around for a lot longer already. In the collectibles sector, antiques, etc., 12% was already being charged over a year ago, and a cap only applies above €990. As a seller, I have to deal with that too.
So IT is still privileged. Maybe eBay also wants to get rid of small merchants without the necessary capacity or with too many listings?
I myself have an extremely hard time buying tech items over €100 on eBay. In the event of a defect, I’ve already experienced some pretty wild rules and ideas myself.

·6 months agoInteresting, **bleep** has noticed the strong competition from Asia and therefore partly lowered fees. And eBay is raising them, great, I already registered with Am. last week, so I guess I'll just sell there now. A theory for once: Is this now about passing on the missing revenue from private sellers to us, so that we end up bearing it?
m-d-parts2017
OP6 months agoThe funny thing is, privately without advertising you absolutely don’t sell anything, so it’s a total bust with the free selling. I could get angry every time about this advertising on the radio.

why are you getting so worked up about how eBay is courting private sellers?
You're selling commercially anyway.

You can sell a few real rarities pretty well as a genuine private seller.

·6 months agoLower fees on ebay??? We’ve just received a notice of the new price adjustment. The fees are going up. At the end of the price adjustment it says: "You don’t need to do anything else. Detailed information about the fees for commercial sellers* ..." ???
Higher fees mean higher prices for the end customer for us too.
You don’t necessarily have to leave ebay as a customer to buy from dealers from the Middle East. You can do that via ebay too. In our experience, none of them (ebay, Germany or the EU) has any real interest in taking consumer-deceptive items off the internet.
Our sales on ebay fell by 30% last year. Higher fees = higher prices for the customer = bigger price difference compared to "dealers" from the Middle East. We know where this is headed.
Good that our own shop is doing so well.
Best regards

·6 months ago"We continuously invest in our marketplace so that you can run your business smoothly and increase sales. As part of these investments, it is sometimes necessary to adjust certain fees – so that we can continue to offer you products and services that support your success on eBay."
What eBay apparently is NOT investing in is AI at a current level and decent support (moderators here are excluded)
Just ridiculous, the new fee adjustments. For me, that just means selling more in parallel outside of eBay.

·6 months ago.... we can "sign off" on that 100% 🙄
It doesn't matter how good and how cheap an item is, without ads even former fast sellers disappear into oblivion .... and now there's also the (for us) disastrous DHL price increase ... we currently have a lot of items hidden already because we don't know how we're supposed to calculate properly (supplier price increase + DHL)
.... somehow hold on for another 10 years until retirement 😋

·6 months agoHi everyone,
of course it depends a lot on the product range how necessary or sensible it is to run ads.
Here’s an example for one of my market segments, "airplanes and spaceships" (source: report on listing optimization):
Even though I’ve never run ads, I’m not doing too badly compared with all 1,860 sellers, in my opinion.

·6 months agoHello @m-d-parts2017 , why should eBay lower the fees? You, I, and many others still sell here despite the current costs. I'm already waiting for the spring news to see whether there'll be a little price hike again this year.
It worked with private sellers - they were gone, and now they've been lured back for years with sweeteners to spruce up the facade. Shall we commercial sellers do the same? That won't work with all the different interests, and some people are still making good money on eBay.
We've had this discussion several times already. In the absence of a real alternative for your parts market, my old paper, and some other junk heaps, the liquidation only works well here (for now).
eBay is a business, concerned solely with its profit. We are merely a means to an end.
Since you haven't managed so far to find, build, or/and simply economically can't build your own alternative, you are allowed to offer your goods here under eBay's conditions.
Doesn't pay off? Do something else. As a self-employed person, you are solely responsible for your own well-being. I'll take what I can here under the applicable terms. Complaining gets you nowhere.

·6 months agoHello, it goes elsewhere, for sure !! And if Ebay keeps going on like this with restrictions - harassment - fee inflation, the point of no return for many sellers is just a matter of time !! Ebay has only one huge advantage, nowhere is the sales process even remotely as easy ! On the other hand, it is becoming harder and harder to get interested buyers, and with advertising it’s turning into a bottomless pit.
At the end of last year I started to scale back more clearly than before here, shifting goods to other channels or selling "en gros" ! Based on the current turnover, I’ll keep doing that ! I can only advise everyone here not to play "hares in the hole" for too long !!

I told you so, it always gets more expensive in spring. You can count on eBay. I don't even need a crystal ball for that. Sure enough, there'll probably be an extra discussion soon.

·7 months agoHello, I suspect eBay can hardly do anything else but rake in fees! If you look at eBay’s core business, things are not looking rosy at all! The Asian channels are pushing into the EU market, purchasing power is dwindling, and the rest of the competition isn’t asleep either! On top of that, eBay traded the reins of action long ago for pure reaction! Shareholders, the supervisory board, staff, and the soft-hardware behemoth.......... all want to be catered to!
Water skiing behind the galley only works with a higher stroke rate!!
