Item listed for auction and buy it now
Summary: nicole19730 reports on a case where a buyer on eBay wanted to buy an item for €100, even though Buy It Now was set at €150. The buyer suggested paying €150 and getting €50 back, which nicole19730 refused. perfect-sally and bootyooty advised against following such suggestions, since eBay does not allow price offers via message and the money has to be handled through eBay. voli-maus suggested canceling the purchase and putting the buyer on the blocked bidders list. scandan26 shared their own experiences, saying that refunds processed through eBay are documented and secure, but warned never to refund money outside of eBay.
Hello,
I listed an item as an auction and Buy It Now. A buyer contacted me and told me that he would buy the item immediately for €100 and asked me to change the listing. I agreed to the €100 and wanted to change the listing. But eBay no longer allowed any changes. I told the buyer this.
The buyer sent me a message telling me that he could transfer the €150.00 to me and that I should then transfer the €50.00 back to him.
I did not agree to this approach.
Have any of you ever had a case like this?

OP3 weeks agoThanks for your replies.
I’ve now sent the buyer the one message with reassurance through eBay. Now we wait.

·Sep 9, 2026 at 4:51 PMHello, @nicole19730
I assume it's item no. 227505595223, which was sold this morning at 06:53 (so even before your opening post). Has the buyer already paid EBAY the €150?
I would be very, very cautious about any possible refund of the supposedly overpaid €50. It could easily be that the buyer returns the item within the 30-day return period for whatever reason (the exact same as yours? in what condition?). Then you would have to pay back the full €150!!! That would even mean a loss of at least €50 for you. If the buyer lives abroad, this whole thing would be much more critical.
Regards
Manfred

·Sep 9, 2026 at 2:10 PMHello @nicole19730 ,
as already written, you cancel the purchase.
As the reason, you can state that something is wrong with the address.
I would put the user on the bidder blocklist.
You can report them too.

·Sep 9, 2026 at 1:40 PMHi @nicole19730 no, that doesn't work like that.
Auction and Buy It Now, there was no make an offer function. Also, the buyer pays ebay and not you. And you can’t transfer anything back to him because you don’t even have his bank details, which may only be passed on in exceptional cases / additional postage approved by ebay.
It’s best to cancel the purchase, otherwise it’ll just cause trouble.
List the item again, with make an offer, then the buyer can buy again if you come to an agreement.
Agreements that don’t comply with ebay guidelines are simply not allowed.

·Sep 9, 2026 at 7:45 AMThere are no price suggestions by message on eBay! You shouldn't even get involved in something like that.
Either a buyer buys normally or they make an offer. And if the buyer has used Buy It Now, then they also pay the listed price.
