Payment by direct debit, unwanted forwarding to financial service provider Riverty
When paying by direct debit, I was redirected without being asked to the company Riverty. I did not request this service and do not want to use it either. I was redirected without being asked and without my consent to the financial service provider Riverty! This is data misuse.
What a presumption!

·3 months agoPayPal is also a payment provider. The easiest thing is probably to just use a credit card directly. However, PayPal and Riverty are reputable so far; the big A also works with the latter.
But please don't use Klarna anymore, since 06/07/2026 they now want full access to your bank account for 180 days (name, account number, balance AND all transactions) including online banking login details, even if the chosen payment method isn't supposed to involve any direct debit by Klarna at all (e.g. with invoice). At that point you might as well just post your bank statements online. Not even Schufa demands full access to bank accounts. Without online banking, you can no longer use Klarna at all. I have already contacted Ebay and suggested that, in light of this rather dubious development, they switch to another payment processor. The long-time partner PayPal, for example, also offers payment by invoice. As a platform, you just have to implement it.

Hello @nini.1973 and thank you for sharing your thoughts with us here in the community too. We understand that the topic of data protection and the permissions requested by payment service providers is important for many users. The specific requirements when using individual payment methods are determined by the respective payment service providers and can change over time.
eBay works with various payment options to give buyers as wide a choice as possible. We take feedback like yours seriously, and I have passed it on to the relevant team at eBay so that your feedback can be included in further reviews.
Best regards
Miriam

Hello @artfusion_1 and thanks for your post! I'm sorry to see that the redirect to Riverty surprised you and didn't feel transparent to you.
When you select direct debit as the payment method on eBay, the payment is technically processed through our integrated and licensed partner Riverty. They handle the debit from the bank account. Riverty is therefore an integral part of this payment method. During the checkout process, you will be asked to confirm a SEPA direct debit mandate. Only with this consent do you authorize Riverty to collect the amount. No transfer takes place without consent; instead, it is tied to your active approval during checkout.
If you do not want to use Riverty, you can choose another payment method at any time, for example PayPal or credit card. Regardless of this, your purchase is also protected by the eBay Buyer Protection when paying by direct debit.
The uncertainty that arose and your feedback on the experience are definitely valuable, and I will take your response on board.
Best regards
Miriam

·6 months agoHello @artfusion_1
somebody has to process the direct debit if you want to pay that way.
By selecting this payment method, you have given your consent to the processing of your data.

OP6 months agoHello, thanks for the feedback. With Paypal I registered myself and opened an account, and I can also manage and delete it. With Riverty, I can only view my data but not manage it. By the way, there is no legal notice in the Riverty app!

·6 months agoThat’s why I pay my buyers exclusively with my own PayPal account, without having to trust any shady payment service providers with my data, or worse, when payments don’t go through every once in a while and you have to wait days until the money is credited back to the account.
artfusion_1
OP6 months agoI see it that way too. Thanks for the honest opinion. If, before making a payment by direct debit, I first have to comb through eBay's help pages to find out about the financial service provider involved, that is certainly extremely questionable.

·6 months agoHi @artfusion_1 sorry, but the last sentence is not quite right.
With Google I immediately find a legal notice in German with Safari.
And if you open the help page at ebay for payment by direct debit
https://www.ebay.de/help/buying/paying-items/artikel-mit-Lastschrift-bezahlen?id=4993
you can also immediately see that Riverty is involved.

·6 months agoHi @bootyooty
I don’t really know the individual payment providers myself, since I always only use PayPal for my purchases.
Is riverty specifically mentioned at checkout? I always only see Klarna for Buy It Now:
In my opinion, a note about riverty on the help pages isn’t enough. As a buyer in this specific example, I’d check out Klarna, not some other provider that isn’t even mentioned.

·6 months agoI'm surprised that artfusion_1 even found an item with direct debit anymore, it wasn't possible for a while already, was it? ... there were quite a few buyers who complained about that
voli-maus
·6 months agoExactly @hasjana ,
I’ve now looked at tons of articles; on none of them was direct debit shown to me as a payment option.

·6 months agoHey @hasjana , hey @voli-maus
Am I completely off base here? Isn't "Klarna Sofort bezahlen" a direct debit after all?
And I keep getting that shown to me all the time.
hasjana
·6 months agoIsn’t that Sofortüberweisung?
I have to admit, I generally pay by PP or, rarely, by CC

·6 months agoHi,
https://www.klarna.com/de/zahlungsmethoden/sofort-bezahlen/
What is Klarna's Pay Now?
With Klarna's “Pay Now,” you pay the full amount directly at checkout with your debit or credit card – with no fees and no credit check. Benefit from fast, secure checkout and Klarna's buyer protection. You can also track and manage your order in the Klarna app.

·6 months agoBehind every payment method on ebay, unfortunately, there is a payment service provider. And the payments also go directly to ebay and not directly to the sellers, but are paid out later.
With ebay, it's still easiest to pay with PayPal.
