CO2 account and sustainability....intention, wishful thinking, or deception?
I’ve now read through the whole philosophy on the topic of the "CO2 account" - including the stated option of "offsetting" it through financial contribution from me....
Of course we all know that offsetting alone won’t change anything, because what we’d actually need to do is build and reconstruct, instead of just patching over it...
Last week, stupidly enough in a shopping frenzy, I bought 13 items from different providers and got 67 (in words: sixty-seven !!!!) emails related to these purchases.
Mostly with completely unnecessary duplicate information or totally pointless content.
Why do I need to be told by email information that I can already view in my eBay account anyway?
Why do I get an email for shipment tracking that then bluntly requires a login at eBay...I’m a grown-up and can log in there without a reminder to check!?
I can also access and use the tracking pages of the shipping companies on my own.
There is no justification for this approach and it’s completely unnecessary to spam my email account full this way....and sadly these messages can’t even be turned off.
"Your package will be there soon!"....
"Your package is arriving earlier than expected!"....
"Your package has been successfully delivered!".... seriously now?
Please, please eBay...if you’re even remotely serious about the CO2 nonsense:
Please stop the notifications about EVERY LITTLE THING that gets left along the delivery route around my items....I don’t want to know!
If we could save all these little things..... the little thing we could spare our planet,
would probably be HUGE....and I might even buy into your sustainability gimmick sooner...
You’d have to visibly lead by example to be taken seriously.
Right now it looks more like you’re generating money from consumers’ guilty consciences - while your own responsibility is being ignored....

The CO2 certificates / CO2 account topic is purely a business model in eBay’s favor as the commission agent and, of course, these incredibly sustainable world-improvement companies like Southpole, who shine with their respectability.
Dear people, it’s simply the case that these CO2 certificates from Southpole are utter nonsense, yes, maybe a possible bet on the future. I’d even trust them to issue CO2 certificates for the Eifel National Park and say, "here, the nice EUR price per square meter, then we won’t clear-cut it" ... okay, that would never have happened anyway, whatever, we can still sell it that way. It’s exactly in this way that these SouthPole guys have already done it. Just google it...
By the way, the dealers have nothing to do with this; they also get no share of the commission, just like eBay itself, but of course they continue to pay fees and commissions, unlike private individuals.
Anyone stupid enough to sink money here is really to blame themselves. Have you ever asked yourselves how it can be possible that Southpole manages, for example, to calculate a CO2 offset for an old Pioneer amplifier from 1978? For a 40-year-old item? Wooooow ... that’s an actuarial masterstroke. It’s all nonsense, and basically pure and obvious rip-off. I’m just waiting for the CO2 offset payment for a plate made in the 18th century. Everything calculated down to the last detail.

Hello @sellformuch! Thank you very much for your honest feedback. We understand how you feel about the number of emails you received, for example, for one of your recent orders, and in your notification settings I can see that all notification settings for purchases have been turned off.
As @katzenjogi already wrote here, these shipment updates come from the respective shipping provider. Your seller entered your encrypted alias email address when purchasing the shipping label, which means these emails are forwarded to you from DHL via the eBay system. In many cases, it can be very useful to stay informed about the shipment status, but I can also understand your point of view. We take this feedback on board, even if I believe that eBay can only change this situation to a limited extent.
You also mention the CO₂ account in your post. eBay calculates the CO₂ emissions of all purchases without sharing any personal data with South Pole. The emissions are recalculated only when the “CO₂ account” is accessed and are not stored. If you do not want the data from your purchases to be used for this, you can object at any time by not using the “CO₂ account”.

The problem with the DHL emails via eBay is that they are sent by DHL, so you can’t opt out of them via eBay.

...when it comes to DHL, it’s really burning under my nails, but I just can’t give in to the impulse - that would probably go way beyond the scope here.
Also, your mention has now landed me an email notification too....I’m slowly dying here and I’m assuming there’s no option here to opt out of these notifications either.... !?
That’s really going well with sustainability at eBay!
I’ll see whether I can block it through the spam filter ... maybe I should just report all unwanted eBay emails as spam ....

Everything that can be opted out of has been opted out... still I get 5-6 emails per purchased item.....

Strangely enough, I keep buying too and never get emails like that. So it must be on your end if others aren't getting them.

Your post simply had ZERO substance, since you apparently only skimmed my message.
I’m not going to be saddled with the blame, not even on the second try - I had attached the screenshot of my notification settings ... I don’t have any other settings available!
What worked was deselected - completely!
With your reply, you indirectly implied that I was too dumb to handle the settings on eBay - at least, if I wanted to take it the wrong way .... and THEN I .... still wouldn’t have gotten snippy, because:
I know posts like yours....you ask for the best train connection from Paris to Peine and get the advice to take the bus or bike instead ...
But that’s not a big deal ... I’d already figured that out, that it wasn’t a mark of quality...

so the CO² offset and the associated account is of course just a marketing gimmick.
However, for example, I don't get any emails about any CO² information or offset payments. And I get the info emails from DPD or DHL regardless of whether I buy on eBay or from any of the competitors. The flood of information comes from logistics companies. eBay has no influence over that.
DHL really goes over the top there; on the day of delivery I get up to four different emails - first the parcel is announced, then they ask again whether I would like to enter an alternative delivery location, then that the parcel will be delivered soon, and then finally an email saying that it was successfully delivered and who signed for it.
Pretty funny, yesterday it was left at reception, even though we have a detached single-family house here - the mailbox signed for it..... meanwhile it was just placed on the step in front of the front door. At least they rang the bell, so the parcel wasn't unattended for too long.
But as I said, that's the responsibility of the shipping provider, regardless of eBay. I get these emails too when I have items delivered that I didn't buy through eBay; only then it says DHL directly and not eBay in the mask.
