Discussion: New view of internal messages in "smartphone look"
Hello dear community,
it seems that eBay has adjusted the view of internal messages.
Instead of a wide message window, you now get a full sidebar that feels like the view on a smartphone. Because of the many line breaks, texts are simply unreadable, and your own messages also stretch across several lines (depending on the number of characters).
a.) Now the question would be, who actually likes this view?
b.) Whether this view is tied only to certain browsers? (here Firefox 139)
c.) Or whether eBay has once again changed something that should really have been at the end of the “to-do” list, or that in terms of “accessibility” should not have been changed at all?
@miriam@ebay
@steffi@ebay
@patrick@ebay
maybe you have an idea who is responsible for the change?
I hope that in the next “community version” polls/voting will also be possible, so that the “top brass” occasionally listens to the “rank and file” as well.
Best regards
Thomas

OP1 year agoCelebrated too soon ...
Now Firefox is back to the narrow view like in the original thread.

·1 year agoEbay actually made the window wider. 👏
With the number of lines, the height of the message window even grows. 😲
So someone really put some thought into it.

Hi Peter,
I checked the view in Chrome after your hint.
Indeed, in Chrome the message window is at normal width.
Now for the follow-up ... in Firefox too, at least here, the original column width is visible again. This morning it was different.
Now quickly knock on wood that it stays that way.
Best regards

Hi Thomas,
with Chrome it looks a bit better:
Just about acceptable.

·1 year agoHello @deichchef ,
it's not satire either, something like that would be completely alien to me 🤣. And I'm not sure whether that would again violate some mysterious principles.

·1 year agoIt’s just awful now and an absolute imposition! 😞
Apparently this is becoming trendy now (as with "[not on eBay]" for example). There’s zero point in doing something like that, not even via a mobile app. Here, for the ABSOLUTE MOST IMPORTANT FUNCTION this site IS HERE for - A MESSAGE - useless space is being “saved” (?). The main thing is that the size/width of the inbox rows is enormous - what’s in the message has become irrelevant...?
Apparently these days it’s no longer in demand to write more than 1-2 lines,... The younger generation apparently isn’t even capable anymore of conducting anything even remotely resembling proper correspondence and is being encouraged (or forced) to behave on a business level too (customer/company/seller contact,...) as if it were just a pointless chat with friends,...
Leaving that aside, as others have already noted, it’s really an absolute imposition: 1. to actually write something properly at all and 2. for the person reading it, they have to scroll like crazy... And structured texts/messages, written well with sentence/punctuation marks and paragraphs, simply degenerate into a (feels like) mile-long text that these days apparently nobody has any “desire” to (properly) keep reading...? And when more than 50% of what’s written is simply ignored (read over,...) and then the endless back-and-forth “chatting” starts - the follow-up questions. Seriously, people, it’s really awful!
I usually write via my email program, and when I later see my message in the eBay messages view (in the browser) I honestly freak out! Not enough that all the formatting goes to hell anyway, etc. It’s simply unbearable to read/write.
It also doesn’t help to use the browser zoom function and/or to drag the text field larger as was once possible; they’ve cut that away too,... (why - did it hurt?)... Over the years this has spread right across the entire internet - everything keeps getting smoother, squarer, smaller, more confusing, super-duper “simplified”, stripped away,... but there’s enough room for countless pop-ups, ads and other annoying junk to click away, or how am I supposed to understand that?
Well, that also needed to be said, no hard feelings.
By the way, these days apparently you can’t even contact the seller without having “price inquiry” etc. in the subject, because the option “other question” apparently no longer exists...?
It really won’t be long before it’s impossible to communicate properly online with all the preset answers to fictitious questions, and if you don’t click on something you can’t move forward (see also customer support at big shop operators or companies that HIDE behind that - just so they don’t have to read and write anymore,... calling is hardly possible in part anymore either,... but okay, enough now for the moment... 🙂

Hello @taucher10-1! You're bringing up points that we don't want to just let stand. The previous feedback in this thread was already passed on to those responsible by me last week, and I'll forward your post today as well, with your wish for a scalable message text field, more options for customizing the subject line, and generally fewer pop-ups and more room for human exchange.
Thanks for taking the trouble to describe how you're feeling so clearly!
Best regards
Miriam

·1 year agoHello,
yes, the right column looks just as puny for me, and nobody can tell me that's intentional.
only the red columns look different for me.

·1 year agoI can also only agree with @ttd4it,
No advantages or improvements whatsoever compared to the old version.
Quite the opposite. Hard to navigate and tiny and flimsy.
But maybe @miriam@ebay can explain to all of us where the improvement is?

·1 year agoSo for me, it’s only been like this for about 1 week.
I can only agree with @ttd4it as well,
that the old version was better and clearer.
I also don’t see what advantages it’s supposed to have.

·1 year agowith old version, hopefully the version before the previous one is meant (so the old normal view), and not the chat view, I generally find that unusable
de3trader
·1 year agoWow, you said it! Because all that does is lead people to use it that way too:
Just don’t think it through beforehand and send a coherent message, instead send every little brain fart separately - the recipient then gets 3-7 separate emails, each of which makes no sense.

Hello,
In Firefox, the view is "normal" for me.
I can’t see any changes to the VCP version from the past few weeks. ("Blind to the everyday" or so minimal that they are hardly/at all noticeable)
The narrow message window, on the other hand, stands out immediately.
It’s as if you were to fold an A4 sheet in half and write on only one side.
In my view, a better way would be to maintain a "project" page where, after logging in, "testers" can review changes in advance, test them, and then "approve" or "reject" them in a vote.
That could save frustration and working time (costs).
To answer your question as well ...
As before, an active part of the community holds the view that it would be better to fix the technical problems than to make unnecessary changes to the design.
I’m also part of that group ...
Best regards

Hello @ttd4it! We are following your exchange here and will pass your feedback on the changed message view on to the responsible teams next week. Until then, we’d still love to hear constructive feedback! Is there anything about your current view that you find positive? 🙂
Best regards

·1 year agoUnfortunately, there is nothing positive 😥
I wonder who comes up with such nonsense and who then signs off on it - take a look here:
You can read the constructive criticism from the image, overall:
On a scale of 1-10 points, I’d give it minus 2 - goal missed, users annoyed, and above all the users not involved (once again, as always).
I can only agree with @ttd4it:
it would be better to fix the technical problems than to make unnecessary changes to the design

Maybe some were just "beta" testers?
Sometimes lines of thought are just inscrutable ...

·1 year agoYeah, it’s been like that for a while now, @ttd4it
gebraucht-ist-gut
·1 year agoThat's true,
I've had the layout like that for months too, so not exactly new at all.
What I do find even worse than the layout:
If you delete a message thread (for the sake of clarity), all messages in "sent" that you've written to that contact are also automatically deleted.
At most, you can then look for them in the trash.
deichchef
·1 year agoFor me, it’s been like that for what feels like 2 months already.
It’s definitely not an improvement.
I don’t know what that looks like on a smartphone.
Probably a new feature 😎
