Gendering
Summary: In a discussion about gender-neutral language at eBay, sammlerkiste-1-2-3 raises the use of inclusive wording in price suggestions. eBay is of the opinion that an inclusive address is important in order to appeal to many people. miriam@ebay prefers "sellers" and expresses the hope that gender-neutral wording will soon become easier. imperial-modellbau humorously suggests "people selling" as a solution. The discussion shows different perspectives on gender-neutral language and its acceptance.
Good morning!
Today I wanted to catch up on the news. Here it's all just gendering now and my desire for information has faded.

·5 months agoHello @miriam@ebay
how about "Sellers" then! 😁 😂 🤣

Hello @freewoman240209 and thanks for bringing this up. Gender-neutral language is certainly not equally pleasant to read for everyone and is perceived differently. At eBay, it is important for us to reach and make visible as many people as possible. That's why, in announcing these changes to offers to buyers, we consciously chose an inclusive formulation and have already specifically revised the text beforehand to find the best possible balance between comprehensibility and inclusive address.
Additionally, it is added that in such explanations we often have to switch between roles like buyers and sellers, which can make the formulations more complex overall. Therefore, we would be interested: Which form of address do you personally prefer, @freewoman240209 - the gender asterisk * or formulations like "sellers and selleresses"?
Kind regards
Miriam

·5 months agoHi Miriam,
I’ll reply too: I prefer "sellers"
... but we too (I mean me 😋) old bones have to admit that the world keeps turning; I hope this gendering will soon resolve into nothingness .... but for me it’s no reason not to read a text 😉

OP5 months agoHello Miriam!
Thanks for your reply. Of course, I prefer the wording saleswomen and salesmen to the gender star. So many gender stars feel irritating to me when reading. Just salespeople is enough for me, as I absolutely do not place any value on being addressed in the feminine form.
Best regards, Christine

Hi Christine,
even if you don’t place any value on gender-inclusive address, there are still enough groups of people who very much support it.
At my age (having grown up in an all-boys high school), it’s also very hard to understand and put into practice. Still, I try. In some areas, it’s even required by law, e.g. in a professional context.
So I’m relatively indifferent to whether someone uses gender-inclusive language or not. I’m moving around here in a marketplace, and what interests me most are the active offers, not the way someone writes. Because that doesn’t matter to me, as long as I understand the text. And that doesn’t depend on whether a gender star is used or not.

·5 months ago... well, everything's already been said.
It's a difficult balancing act .... if you do it as a big corporation, people complain, if you don't do it, people complain too😂
I think the ones who are most "pissed off" are the "non-native German speakers"; after painstakingly learning what der, die, das is, and now it's being doubled up.
A good example that I always have in mind from my Iranian neighbor:
The cat is fine ... The cat is hungry ... so which is it now😋

·5 months agoIf this here on Ebay were the biggest problem - things would be really good for us ! ! ! 🙄
It's up to each person what they read or don't read - but then they also shouldn't complain if "he/she/it" 😂 doesn't pick up on important information !

·5 months agoHey @freewoman240209 honestly, I really couldn’t care less whether gender-inclusive language is used or not. In the end, it’s up to each person whether they go along with it or not.
And you should always read important info or news, whether or not gender-inclusive language is used there, you can just “read past” that. 😉

I don't think much of it either, but since the third gender has fought for its existence by court ruling, you won't be able to avoid gendering anymore.
