I don't want my place of residence to be mentioned when I just have a question about the article.
A friendly hello to everyone!
EBay always keeps a low profile when it comes to disclosing data.
I would like to communicate with the seller in advance if I am considering
buying there and have questions about the item.
That they get my data after a contract has been concluded
is not an issue. But I do not want my place of residence
to be disclosed beforehand.
My question: Is there somewhere a button where I can turn this off?

I've come to terms with all this data protection (crap), and nowadays you're so transparent that if someone wants something from you and wants to know where you live, they can find out anyway, and so on.
You wouldn't believe where I've already found my address all over the internet etc. (well, mine is also in my imprint), and so it's already everywhere and nowhere at the same time.
If company xy says in its privacy policy that it is only used for internal purposes and deleted within 3 months blah...blah...blah, do you know whether all that is true and your data isn't sold or something after all (example).
Look, for example, in parking lots your car's license plate gets scanned and just like that they can determine your data if they want to.

In parking lots, the vehicle owner is always determined if they violate the time limit, not necessarily the driver. 😎
Here, an account is tied to a person, i.e. anyone who communicates with someone through the eBay system is shown which city the other person comes from.
That probably hardly counts as data protection.
With a seller, I don't care, they get my address anyway for delivery, but random people, especially the ones who contact me unsolicited for whatever reason, don't necessarily need to know where my house lives!
But I was already annoyed back then when this change went through.
BTW... the followers, they were anonymized back then, why actually? 😎

·2 years agoDear @miriam@ebay , WHERE did I agree that anyone else (whoever that is for as long as it is NOT a purchase/sale) can simply get my place of residence and, if necessary, draw conclusions, as already explained? These are and remain personal data. I am asking here for the info on the relevant text passage so that I can withdraw my consent.
Furthermore, NOBODY should find out my federal state - an option, however, would also be okay for me.

I can only support @*sweet-melody* and the others posting here in the forum.
Today I was contacted by a potential buyer and received the following info in the message:
But when I go to the customer's profile, I only see the following info:
Nothing here shows where he lives.
To me, that has nothing to do with privacy anymore.
I also wouldn't know why I would need to know the customer's location in order to answer a question about the item, etc. If a customer wants to pick up an item, they can ask that directly too, because they're, for example, on vacation on the beautiful Baltic Sea. As a seller, I don't need their place of residence for that either. If it comes to a purchase, I do get their delivery address, and as a seller that's all I care about, especially not where they live.
So please quickly go back to the way it was and don't show more in messages than in the profile.

If you want to communicate via the Ebay system as a private user, you apparently had better be prepared to move regularly so as to confuse your communication partners about your location
Yeah, yeah, I know, if you live in Berlin, it's easy to say that.....
In any case, I get the impression that Ebay only really seems to take data protection seriously when it is useful for Ebay to conceal something
But maybe I'm wrong in this case too, and after the "data protection specialized department" has carefully "reviewed" everything, @miriam@ebay will humbly announce here that Ebay is really terribly sorry and that it promises to handle the entrusted data more carefully in the future.

As a GVK, I have to comply with the legal requirements and
provide the necessary information in the imprint.
That’s fine with me. Even if my data is collected,
when a valid purchase contract is concluded.
But what I’m not okay with is when I only have a question about the
item offered or want to point something out to the VK
without a purchase contract being concluded right away.
Why does he need my data for that? If I go to a
store in person and ask the VK a question, then from me comes:
*Good day, I have a question!* and not: *Good day,
I’m from Germany and live in Munich and
there are no entries in my criminal record.*

Hello @*sweet-melody* and everyone! We’re seeing that this topic is on your minds and would like to share our reasoning for why "Ask seller a question" includes the buyers’ place of residence. I’m taking over here for @anna_s@ebay.
eBay users can find out about sellers on the item pages or through the feedback profile. At the same time, we want to give those who sell their items on eBay the opportunity to find out the location and registration date of a potential customer base. This information could perhaps help when deciding whether to offer in-person pickup alongside paid/free shipping if there is purchase interest. Especially in recent years, eBay Germany has placed a strong emphasis on continuing to promote and strengthen local shopping.
However, your privacy on eBay remains protected through your eBay username. Also, at this point no personal data is disclosed to the sellers. Sharing the location does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about you personally, and the registration date is shown for every eBay member on the feedback page. Seen this way, nobody can do anything with your place of residence if the eBay name was chosen freely and no conclusions can be drawn about your real name. In addition, for an initial inquiry we recommend only revealing your first name and eBay name, and not signing with first and last name, as may be customary in other areas of life.
We’re reading your concerns and the discussion and have taken on board the request to deactivate this sharing of information before purchase is completed - thank you for that.

Unfortunately, it’s not satisfactory for me, because I feel
grown up enough to make my own decisions and don’t need anyone
to nudge me. Besides, not all inquiries
refer to an item that I might possibly buy.
I still view passing on the place of residence critically, especially for
users who live in a small village.
Since eBay is sticking with this practice, I will of course continue to not
maintain contacts and ask questions. Only when a contract comes about
and only buy if everything is clear and a question is unnecessary.

If pickup is an option, then the parties could surely just exchange locations on their own.
I find it downright intrusive to have eBay handle that across the board, because maybe, perhaps, it could be within the realm of possibility.
Aside from that, it is completely irrelevant to the seller where the inquiring buyer lives.
They’ll find out the address after the purchase anyway.
But please not beforehand.
And if I ask whether pickup is possible, I might also be visiting somewhere and want to pick it up. In that case, my place of residence doesn’t matter at all.

That is not true across the board either.
Depending on the item, area of interest, online activity, etc., it would בהחלט be possible to narrow down the person making the inquiry.
For example, by asking questions to get a response and thus finding out the place of residence.
The smaller the town, the easier that is.
I’ve also already received messages here from users in the forum that I simply don’t reply to, because it’s nobody’s business where I live.

both place of residence and federal state are completely irrelevant when contacting someone via the messaging system - if the seller wants to know where the person asking the question is registered / lives (in which country), they can look it up in the feedback profile
since the place of residence is transmitted, I have also stopped answering questions (regarding the forum); the same goes for questions to sellers when interested in buying - either everything relevant is already in the listing, or I look for another seller सीधे away

but that's been the case for years now.
Unfortunately, I no longer remember when this location was introduced in communication through the eBay system. But it definitely wasn't like that before!
And I also remember getting really annoyed about it, because in my opinion it's completely unnecessary, at least for buyers when making inquiries to the seller, since as a buyer I can and may also have something delivered to a friend in a place 500 km away in the event of a purchase.
So why is my place of residence disclosed?
Since then, for various reasons, I have also avoided communication through the eBay system, but there are also certain types (people asking questions) who use this function to vent verbally, and that is exactly a point where I strictly refuse to accept that such a person - with whom I have no transaction - can then see where I live.

commercial sellers HAVE TO publish data - they’re no longer allowed to do it within the listing, but they do have their own area for the legal info for that

And if, conversely, Ebay does not want people to pass on addresses or parts of their address in contact information such as emails via eBay's own system and then NOT forward these emails, then the same should apply to Ebay as well. We are not talking here about exchanging data during a purchase, but about PRIOR inquiries, where one party then receives the other person's place of residence via eBay communication channels without there ever having to be a purchase. That has a bit of a nasty edge to it ...
I think one should acknowledge that some users do not want this - quite apart from data protection.

But I don't see that, and it's not evident from your reply either, as far as my location is concerned.
But your location was already in the first email I sent to you - it hadn't been explicitly mentioned before, so on your side.
Anyway, I can understand it now.
I couldn't care less anyway whether someone knows which place is behind my nickname.
As long as Ebay doesn't reveal my real name in simple contact requests without a purchase having taken place.

·2 years agoThat's probably how it is. Really unacceptable ... there may be reasons, as mentioned here too, why someone wouldn't want that. I'm pretty sure there's nowhere on Ebay saying that the location of a potential buyer can simply be passed on in the case of simple inquiries, but I'd be happy to be corrected with a corresponding Ebay link.

However, not every seller's exact location is shown, only, for example, Germany. The city is then effectively shown only in the first contact (or when you buy, of course).

·2 years agoOne question about this: Where do you all see the place of residence when you inquire as a buyer with a seller? As for me, when I ask a question, I only ever see the seller's location. Which makes sense, since you can see that beforehand anyway. But my location? I don't see it either in my inquiry about whatever or in my emails in my eBay account. Do you have an example or a screenshot, blacked out if you want?
I’d be very interested in that now. Even if it wouldn’t bother me all that much.

it's the other way around...
if you write to someone here via "Contact", e.g. via the review profile,
then that person sees your location at the very bottom of the email....
I didn't know that at all, only when I contacted someone once that I could no longer reach via the community
and chose this route, I noticed that in the reply....

I totally and completely agree with you on that too.
With a simple inquiry or even with an answer to a question!, it’s nobody’s business where I live.
In a purchase and legally binding sales contract, the buyers don’t even learn the private seller’s details and would have to request them first if needed, and here the place of residence is just thrown around like it’s nothing.
I also can’t see the point behind this approach.
It’s been bothering me for a long time; not everyone lives in a big city where it doesn’t matter.

it’s never bothered me and I have to admit I’ve never even looked at it.
In the messages I’ve received, the location is shown for some users, but not for others. Only God or Ebay know why that is. Maybe @verena@ebay can provide more info here.
Maybe you have stored a sender address or a return address in your data?
