I personally find the introduction highly annoying and unfriendly to customers, because it is not uncommon to need additional help from image editing software (e.g. adjusting contrast, color balance, etc.) to get a more accurate impression of an object being offered (specifically: historical coins), which used to work perfectly fine with .jpg.

But why make it so cumbersome when the standard file formats .jpg and .png, which were common until recently, are still available?

Because .webp has advantages for website operators.

Whether it is more cumbersome for others to save photos is irrelevant.

Well, things do change - maybe you’ve already experienced that with PNG... Compression shouldn’t necessarily be seen as the enemy either - without it, we wouldn’t have MP3/OGG today, and not to mention h.265 or even AV1 for 4K and 8K video.

Although I’ve long since given up on Windows, Irfan View was actually always up to date (possibly via plugin):

Don’t want to sound h**Ouch** but I hardly think webp will still be avoidable next year... ebay certainly won’t be cooking up any "special sausages"

These .webp images are like a plague.

I also save photos from the internet here and there, which I then can’t open.

You just have to look for a converter online, a hassle, but then it works.

Hello @Anonymous! Currently, on eBay, photos and videos can be added to listings in the following image formats: .jpg, .gif, .bmp, .png, .tif, .WebP, .HEIC, or .avif.

I’d be happy to raise your request to no longer allow these image formats, especially in collector categories like coins internally. Could you please show us, using screenshots, how the image formats differ when editing them with image editing programs and exactly where the challenges arise?

Hello Miriam,

Photos and graphics have so far been displayed in the generally known and common file formats .jpg and .png. However, for a short time now, all photos and graphics have had the file format .webp. These .webp files cannot be displayed with the usual standard image viewing programs. To open the files, special software is required, which is not installed on the vast majority of computers.

If, for example, I copy an image from an offer and send only this image by email, the recipient cannot open this .webp file.

Therefore, I suggest that images and graphics be saved again in the previously common standard formats .jpg and .bmp.

Actually not desired from other people's offers, and for your own offers you should actually have the images saved.

You shouldn't really do that with other people's offers, and with your own offers you should have saved the images anyway.

for my purchases, for example, I create a PDF from the item page, among other things - it generally only has a not particularly good image

if it's a somewhat more expensive or otherwise more valuable item, I also save all the images in very good resolution

for some time now I've been getting more and more heic images, and I even had to look for a program for my computer so I could convert them to view them

Where do you see webp?

On the one hand, I can understand using newer standards, but so far I haven’t really been able to warm up to webp - it usually looks worse and has more artifacts.

But then images these days are mostly real monsters anyway, so the blurring doesn’t matter all that much... or at least it shouldn’t; some people still “photograph” with potatoes even today 😄

By now, at least my programs do webp and heif too... sometimes you have to make time for the software garden before the software garden makes time for you...
